A French aristocrat descended from one of France's last monarchs has demanded the return of an historic chateau that once belonged to his family amid a row over turning part of it into a hotel and accusations that artworks have gone missing. Jean d'Orleans, a descendant of Louis Philippe I who ruled France during the July Monarchy, has written to prosecutors to say that Chateau Chantilly - located 30 miles north of Paris - should be returned to his ownership. Jean, 56, says the chateau's current owner - the Institute of France - has mismanaged the property and in doing so has violated the terms on which it was donated to them in 1886 by his ancestor, Henri d'Orleans. The chateau and its huge collection of art is one of the best-known in France, but it has run into financial trouble in recent years despite a £70million restoration carried out by the Aga Khan and £4million in government grants from Covid recovery funds. It featured in the 1985 Bond film A View To A Kill as the lair of villain Max Zorin, with...

People walk past the headquarters of the People's Bank of China (PBOC), the central bank, in Beijing, China September 28, 2018. Jason Lee | Reuters BEIJING — China's central bank removed several phrases on policy restraint in a quarterly report, a move economists said may be a sign that stimulus is on its way. The People's Bank of China has kept monetary policy little changed since China shook off the worst of the pandemic's impact last year. Economic growth has slowed in the last several months amid a regulatory crackdown on the property sector, power shortages at factories and lackluster consumer spending. The PBOC's third quarter report on monetary policy released late Friday left out a reference to how the central bank would not engage in large-scale, flood-like stimulus. It's a phrase that indicates policy restraint and has appeared in central government statements since at least 2019, before the pandemic. "In our view, these deletions represent an official change to the PBoC's policy stance and sets the stage for more decisive monetary and credit easing," Ting Lu, chief China economist at...

MinnPost file photo by Karl Pearson-CaterThis year’s school board elections faced an unprecedented level of scrutiny fueled by heated debate over masking mandates and critical race theory. With the election now over, the main outcome from Tuesday’s vote for Minnesota’s schools is an increase in funding from local taxpayers in many districts across the state. Now, with the dust settling, MinnPost spoke with education leaders to look ahead as to what the results means for schools. Here are the main takeaways: Ballot questions on funding schools through local taxes passed in a majority of districts — even in districts that had rejected similar questions in the past. Sixty-five districts across the state asked voters to approve or renew operating levies or to raise taxes to increase levies to help fund schools as they struggle to keep up with rising costs. Nearly two-thirds of the referendums passed, with 100 percent of the referendums passing in metro areas and 63 percent passing in rural areas. State funding has declined over the years (now only accounting for 65 percent of school funding), leaving...

By Steven Church and John Gittelsohn | Bloomberg The developer of one of the biggest homes ever built in the U.S. — featuring a moat and 30-car garage — filed for bankruptcy to keep lenders from foreclosing on the Los Angeles property. Dubbed “The One,” the mansion was being developed by Crestlloyd LLC when a fight broke out with lenders, including Hankey Capital. The lenders went to court in Los Angeles claiming they weren’t being paid, according to court papers. Eventually, a receiver was appointed to handle the project. Crestlloyd “believes that the receiver has hampered efforts to complete the property, as well as to market, show, and sell the property in its current state,” the company said in bankruptcy court papers. My husband and I did a do-it-yourself family photo shoot in his starter home in Georgia last October before I launched the search for my first and his second home. I’m no real estate expert. I’ve never even owned property, but I am now effectively under contract for a property in metro Atlanta—no small feat if you’re familiar with this market, or really any market. The coronavirus pandemic has had a bewildering effect on real estate, which the White House confirmed in a report dated Sept. 1. The pandemic “shifted families’ preferences for location and type of housing, exacerbating existing supply chain constraints that—for several reasons—have persisted for many years,” White House officials wrote. “These pandemic-related changes interacted with the existing housing inventory shortage, resulting in sharp price increases for both owned homes and rental units.” At the same time, mortgage rates have dropped to historic lows, driving an influx of would-be buyers to the market, Forbes reported in June. “Anecdotally, increasingly desperate tactics from would-be buyers are becoming the norm: ‘love letters’ from prospective buyers to owners of homes not on the market persuading them to sell,...
When three-year-old AJ was miraculously discovered by a rescue helicopter deep in the bush 72 hours after he went missing from his family home, Australia breathed a sigh of relief. But the saga may only just be beginning, with police still examining the curious disappearance - including the possibility he was kidnapped and later released.   There were scenes of jubilation when young Anthony 'AJ' Elfalak was finally located by Pol Air helicopter drinking from a creek on his family's 256ha rural property in Putty, about 150km north-west of Sydney in the Upper Hunter, on Monday. He had disappeared from his family's property on Friday lunchtime, leading to a desperate search with his parents convinced he was abducted. Now the police investigation is continuing, with some senior detectives in the NSW Police Force say 'there are of lot of things that don't add up' including claims of missing CCTV footage from the family property.  Raising suspicion for seasoned investigators is how the toddler, who has autism and is non-verbal, could have survived without anything to eat for 72 hours in temperatures that...

Sign up for the free Mother Jones newsletter.Last Friday, as Hurricane Ida was tearing up trees and ripping roofs from homes in western Cuba, officials on the Louisiana coast put out the call to residents: Get out. Forecasters were saying the “extremely dangerous major hurricane” would make a beeline for the bayous and oil refineries along the Gulf Coast. In Lafourche Parish, where the storm would eventually make its landfall, parish president Archie Chaisson issued a mandatory evacuation order. “Not the easiest decision I’ve ever made in life here in parish government,” Chaisson told residents in a Facebook livestream. “But one we felt was necessary, as a group, to help keep everybody safe.” Everybody, that is, except the roughly 600 people locked in the Lafourche Parish Detention Center. A day after the evacuation order, some of the detainees were tasked with filling up sandbags to protect residents’ property against flooding. People incarcerated in the parish were not evacuated, even as the storm gained...
A new construction project from Mohamed Hadid has been causing problems for local residents - just months after the real estate developer tried to sell a half-built mega-mansion he had been ordered to tear down over safety concerns. Hadid, the father of supermodels Gigi and Bella Hadid, has started construction on  a new Beverly Hills property overlooking Coldwater Canyon with an asking price of $250 million. The 38-acre site at 9650 Cedarbrook Drive is the largest home ever permitted in Los Angeles County and would become the most expensive residential home ever sold in California if it meets the high asking price, as noted by Forbes Global Properties. Exclusive DailyMail.com photos show that construction of the nearly 80,000 square-foot mansion has already closed certain hiking trails in the area. Heavy machinery can be seen on the property, as well as the home's completed foundation. A sign posted at one of the trailheads reads, 'NOTICE: Trail closed by developer Mohamed Hadid. Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy & MRCA sued to keep this trail open but lost at the Court of Appeal.' Hillsides Against Hadid blasted Mohamed...

People often point to the sentience of animals when advocating for animal rights. Animals are conscious beings that are able to feel sensations and emotions in response to the world. When a dog is hit, he will feel pain and may develop a fear of some humans. When people take away a calf from his mother, both animals often grieve. While animal sentience is pretty obvious to most people, animals are often categorized as property and not given any fundamental rights. However, times are changing and so are laws around the world. In Switzerland, citizens are voting on whether monkeys and apes can have fundamental rights; in Spain, domestic animals will be considered “living beings” instead of mere objects; and the Jane Goodall Act in Canada would grant legal standing to great apes, elephants, and cetaceans, recognizing them as sentient individuals rather than property. Source: The Independent/YouTube Recently, the British government also officially recognized animals as “sentient beings” rather than “property” or “objects.” Animals now have legal protections, which UK lawmakers are currently working on expanding. This includes stopping...
Andrew Cuomo is already saying goodbye to the house he lived in as governor. Photo: Cindy Ord / . / Google Maps Andrew Cuomo is living his last hours as governor of the state of New York, when it was announced that there are already moving teams working inside the well-known as New York State Executive Mansion, in order to support you to move all your assets to what will be your new home. According to what is appreciated in the images released by the AP news agency and the New York Post, the mobilization inside the historic house is constant, so it would not be surprising if this Friday they conclude with the move. Among the objects that have been taken are some works of art and various boxes. A waterfront park is emerging as the main option to build a memorial for the victims of the residential building that collapsed in Florida, a judge said Wednesday. The city of Miami Beach recently offered a portion of the 28-acre (11-hectare) North Beach Oceanside Park as a possible location to commemorate the June 24 collapse of the Champlain Towers South building, which killed 98 people. Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Michael Hanzman said at a remote hearing Wednesday that a plan to make the memorial where the 12-story building stood as desired by some families was unrealistic. The nearly one hectare (2 acre) location in Surfside, he said, must be sold to compensate the victims of the tragedy. At least one bidder has offered up to $ 120 million for the property. “It must be used for the collective benefit of all victims,” Hanzman said. The park, he added, is “a remarkable and extremely valuable real estate property. I understand that it is a beautiful place within walking distance ”.
