"That's when I put two and two together. We don't see our foods."Wahpepah knew early that she wanted to open a restaurant, but she needed to figure out a way to present ceremonial foods to the public. It's Garland's first appearance before the House Judiciary Committee Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) kicked off Attorney General Merrick Garland's House Judiciary hearing on a raucous note with an opening statement attacking Garland and his Democratic colleagues.  'The chairman just said Trump's DOJ was political. Are you kidding me?' Jordan asked in response to Chair Rep. Jerry Nadler's opening statement. He accused the DOJ of 'opening a snitch line on parents' with his memo announcing a crackdown on school board meeting incidents and giving lawmakers who asked about it 'the finger.' 'Republicans on this committee have sent the Attorney General 13 letters in the last six months,' he said. 'Eight of the letters, we've got nothing - they just gave us the finger.'  Earlier this month Garland issued a memo directing the FBI to work with law enforcement to crack down on a rising number of violent incidents at school board meetings and education settings. The normally apolitical field has become an ideological battleground as parents express outrage at mask mandates and critical race theory being taught in schools. He wrote...
No Time to Die scored $56 million in the box office opening weekend, despite being delayed over a year and Daniel Craig's last role as the title character The long-anticipated new James Bond movie, No Time To Die, made a disappointing $56million in its opening weekend in the US - sparking speculation vaccine and mask mandates may have put 007 fans off going to their local movie theater. No Time To Die had been predicted to make up to $60m in the US in its opening weekend, falling far short of the $90.1m post-COVID record set by Venom last week. By comparison, No Time To Die made $35m during its opening weekend in the United Kingdom. Great Britain is home to 66.7 million people, compared to the 329.5 million who live in the US, meaning that the movie could easily have crashed through the $170m barrier in its opening weekend if the same proportion of Americans had gone to see it as Brits. Vaccine rules have also been speculated as a cause for the lukewarm opener, with everyone in the...

The first bit of news today is that the United States Chamber of Commerce has been sitting in on strategy calls by the GOP leadership of the United States House of Representatives. That's news, because the chamber speaks for every major corporation you can think of. It claims to be nonpartisan and strictly business-focused. That was a lie. The second bit of news is the decision by the chamber to flip-flop on its support of a Democratic plan for nation-building at home. After months of lobbying for a bipartisan $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill, at a cost of millions, it decided this morning to oppose it. That's news, because its decision was announced after reporters revealed the House GOP leadership was kicking the chamber off its strategy calls. What can we take away from this news? First, as I said, the chamber has been lying to us. It has been an active participant in advancing the House Republican agenda, even when that agenda is a hit-and-run over democracy itself. (Many of its members have resumed making donations to Republicans who...

EschCollection | Stone | Getty Images The next time a company accountant is tallying up operational expenses for their office buildings there could be several new items on the list: sensors, ultraviolet lights and maybe even plants with algorithms. As companies and building owners re-open office doors after the coronavirus pandemic, they are now faced with greater responsibilities in keeping tenants and workers safe. Grant Morgan, the CEO of biosafety start-up R-Zero, said that this has opened up a whole new line of business for companies providing products and services around hygiene and safety. Building tenants and employees will expect it, he said. Last year it rolled out its first ultraviolet disinfection machines for disinfecting rooms. The equipment is typically seen in hospitals but R-Zero has developed...
By Laura Smith-Spark | CNN More than 18 months into the coronavirus pandemic, a number of countries have decided it’s time to open up and adopt a “living with Covid” model. Some have enviable vaccination rates; others have decided that the costs of continued economic and social restrictions outweigh the benefits. Here are five nations to watch closely for how their new strategies play out. Denmark: The country that declared precautions over The Danish government lifted all remaining coronavirus restrictions in the country on September 10, saying Covid-19 was no longer “an illness which is a critical threat to society.” Danes can now enter nightclubs and restaurants without showing a “Covid passport,” use public transport without wearing a face covering and meet in large numbers without restrictions — essentially returning to pre-pandemic life. The key to Denmark’s success lies partly in its vaccination rollout: as of September 13, over 74% of Denmark’s population was fully vaccinated against Covid-19, according to Our World in Data. The transmission rate, or R-rate, currently stands at 0.7, Health Minister Magnus Heunicke tweeted Wednesday, meaning...

Michael Kappeler/picture alliance via Getty Images Latest Updated 2021-07-23T11:48:08Z The Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics officially kicked off on Friday with the Opening Ceremony and the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron.  The ceremony has a different feel this year as the stadium is mostly empty except for some special dignitaries, including Dr. Jill Biden.  The big storyline to start the Olympics is still the risk of the spread of COVID-19 and how it will affect the games as nearly 100 athletes have already tested positive. We also have a new report from Forbes that "at least" 100 US athletes have not been vaccinated. Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

Kanye West to reveal Donda album at massive Atlanta event Asian markets rise as earnings optimism outweighs COVID fears Look no further to understand the power dynamic between the Olympics and the nations that host them.  As the Tokyo Olympics launched a soft start ahead of Friday's opening ceremony, the International Olympic Committee awarded the 2032 Summer Games to Brisbane, Australia. Hours after the news was announced on Wednesday, Australian Olympic Committee President John Coates and Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk answered questions at a news conference in Tokyo. That's where the following happened. Coates took issue with Palaszczuk's previous statements that she and the rest of the Brisbane delegation didn't plan to attend the Tokyo opening ceremony. He ordered her to attend — while sitting next to her on a stage for all the world to see. OKAY we'll admit it - we can't go past a McDonald's drive-thru without stopping in for a 20-pack of chicken nuggets. But the one downside of this set-up is having to get ketchup sachets to go - because half the time, we can't even get them open. 2The McDonald's hack has racked up thousands of viewsCredit: TikTok 2Mum-of-three Kelly Mergs put the life hack to the testCredit: TikTok Well instead of furiously biting at the edges until the plastic is all mangled and grim, this savvy McDonald's fan has revealed how she gets it open in one swift motion. And not just that - her "genius" method also makes it WAY easier to dip your fries while you're eating in the car. Last week, TikTok user Erica shared the little-known method she always taught her daughter Morgan to use. In a viral video called "IMPORTANT FRENCH FRY HACK", the mum said: "We taught her to get the ketchup packet and tear it [down the side]. "And then when you open the packet, she could dip her fries right in there."...
(CNN) — It’s been more than a year since the pandemic started, and the US economy is showing signs of recovery. Covid-19 vaccinations are rising, states have lifted some pandemic restrictions and many travelers are back on the road. While Americans are eager to kick-start post-pandemic life, that could also mean spending more money on activities they may not have done in a while — like going to the movies, dining out or taking a vacation. ANTIOCH — More than five years after golfers took their last swings at the Roddy Ranch Golf Club, plans are taking shape for its new life as a regional park. While no one knows exactly what it will look like, East Bay Regional Parks District planners on Thursday night gave residents a glimpse into three concepts, all of which will restore habitat, protect endangered species and native grasslands while allowing for some passive recreation such as walking, jogging, picnicking, horseback riding or biking. East Bay Regional Parks collaborated with the East Contra Costa County Habitat Conservancy to buy the property three years ago. They envision the 230-acre land at the border of Antioch and Brentwood as a gateway to the future Deer Valley Regional Park, an unbroken open space of some 3,500 acres from Balfour Road down Vasco Road to almost Interstate 580 northwest of Livermore. “It’s incredibly biologically rich,” Abigail Fateman, executive director of the East Contra Costa County Habitat Conservancy, said, noting some protected plant species exist there that aren’t found anywhere else in the county. One of...

It’s day three at Wimbledon. We’ve already had an abundance of twists, turns and slips. Here are some thoughts on Roger Federer and Serena Williams—39-year-old parents trying to establish records—one still in the draw, the other not. But, as it is written: Wednesday is Mailbag Day; so here goes…. Jon, I saw your seed reports and agree that Novak Djokovic is the player to beat. My question: Why is he so good on grass? I understand hard courts. And we know that if Nadal weren’t around, he would have many more French Opens. But why grass? Charles, LA • For the record, after beating Jake Draper in round one, Djokovic now has precisely the same winning percentage on grass as he does on concrete. He is the de-de-fending champ at Wimbledon and most people have...

A newly elected Latino Republican mayor set to represent an 85% Latino town in Texas believes many Latinos are “opening their eyes” after years of supporting Democratic candidates. “Well, during the past election, it’s amazing what happened here in South Texas,” said Javier Villalobos, who is set to represent McAllen as mayor. “I think, generally, the Hispanic community is very conservative, yet, traditionally, they voted Democrat. It’s amazing what happened this past election. I think our numbers as far as conservative voters were up by substantially. We finally, finally have competition in South Texas. So I think it’s going to open up the doors for a lot of people.” Villalobos, who previously served as chairman of the Hidalgo County GOP in South Texas, signaled optimism that the GOP is now making headway with the traditionally Democratic constituency in the region. REPUBLICAN WINS MAYORAL RACE IN MAJORITY-HISPANIC MCALLEN, TEXAS “Down in South Texas, it’s a little bit different,” Villalobos said. “Like I said, traditionally Democrat, however, they are, a lot of individuals, including older individuals that have forever voted Democrat, are...
McAllen, TX mayor-elect Javier Villalobos said Friday, Fox News Channel’s “Your World” that Latino voters were “opening up their eyes” to Republican leadership after voting for Democrats for a long time. Partial transcript as follows: CAVUTO: Alright, now a lot of people have been noticing even in the last election where Donald Trump scored more of the Latino vote than then he did even in the election four years prior, how do you see the Latino vote if I can generalize, going right now? VILLALOBOS: Down in south Texas, it’s a little bit different. Like I said, traditionally Democrat, however, they are, a lot of individuals, including older individuals that have forever voted Democrat are opening up their eyes, accepting different ideas, both social and economic. And that’s amazing. We will have some, I always tell everybody, competition is good. It has been traditional Democrats of South Texas have been ignored a lot of the times, it won’t happen anymore. We expect next election, that we will have the same type of results. We have candidates now running for Congress,...
It may have taken 15 playoff appearances over 18 NBA seasons, but LeBron James has finally suffered a first-round postseason defeat. Beset by injuries, the defending-champion Lakers were overwhelmed by Devin Booker and the Phoenix Suns on Thursday night, dropping Game 6, 113-100, at Staples Center in Los Angeles. James & Co. nearly engineered a valiant second-half comeback, but Booker proved to be too much, dropping 47 points while draining 8 of 10 3-point attempts. With the season-ending loss, the Lakers became only the fifth reigning title holder in NBA history to be eliminated on their home court in the first round. LeBron James reacts during the second quarter of the Lakers' season-ending loss on Thursday For the Lakers, the fall from atop the NBA's hierarchy was fast. Back in October, James and his Lakers teammates were celebrating the franchise's 17th NBA title with a Finals victory over the Miami Heat inside the league bubble in Orlando. But the realities of pro sports in the pandemic dictated that the 2020-21 season start in late December, and the quick turnaround...
With theaters reopening, movies like “A Quiet Place Part II” are setting box-office records for post-pandemic lockdown releases. And the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Los Angeles posted last week about being sold out for the first time through the entire weekend. But in Silicon Valley, movie audiences have been much slower to return — even with COVID-19 vaccination numbers up and theaters cleaning auditoriums and installing new ventilation systems. Shannon Guggenheim of 3Below Theatres, the only movie theater in downtown San Jose, is puzzled by the lack of business. “Sadly, I can report things are still quite bleak,” she said Thursday. “Presales are almost zero for this weekend and yesterday not a single soul crossed our threshold.” What surprises Guggenheim the most is that lower numbers made sense when the theater at 288 S. Second St. was mostly offering niche, independent films, but since reopening last month they’ve been running mainstream movies like “Cruella” and “In the Heights” and attendance has actually been worse. And while 3Below is an extreme example, they’re not alone. A quick online survey of theaters...
CHICAGO (CBS) — High winds and waves mean swimming is off limits at Chicago beaches for opening day. CBS 2’s Lauren Victory reports from Montrose Beach. READ MORE: No Need For That: Roseland Pumping Station Problems Persist, Upsetting Business Owners, Residents The Chicago Park District said the water temperature is about 48 degrees as of Friday afternoon. No one was allowed in the water all of last season. How ironic for the Windy City that the first day allowed on the beach looks more like a fall day. “Memorial Day weekend, historically, has been hit or miss weather-wise,” said Castaways General Manager Eugene Mori. That’s true, but the cold temps and cloudy skies couldn’t be more of a bummer for beach restaurants. COVID restrictions prevented places like Castaways at North Avenue Beach from opening until August last year. At least this summer begins only a day late with just one big change: “We’ll start the season without the live entertainment,” Mori said. “Which is less than ideal for us but we’re still really excited to open our doors.” READ MORE:...

‘Have vaccine. Will travel.’ The Schwab’s 2021 Modern Wealth Survey concluded that Americans are dreaming most about traveling (40%) and socializing (30%) and taking a vacation (24%). AFP via Getty Images American spending habits are about to get real. As vaccination rates increase in the U.S., so will people’s willingness to open their wallets.
