As part of the quietest revolution in royal public relations, Prince William’s Time To Walk podcast avoids the usual marketing hype. It’s just a man walking alone chatting with an imaginary companion. ‘Like I’ve been on a walk with my best mate or my wife,’ says the prince, and that’s exactly what it feels like. Nice to see the happy inclusion of Catherine, but significantly, there is no mention of any of the big royal news stories of the day. There’s no attempt to twist our loyalties or plead for sympathy, no hint of victimhood or sly whisper of accusation, no false self-deprecation or blowhard claim of improbable expertise.  Just a man talking and trusting us to recognise the power of his vulnerability as he does so. Jeff Bezos, the world's second richest man, donated $500,000 at a charity gala at the weekend - the joint-largest pledge of the evening. The world's second richest man, 57, and his girlfriend Lauren Sanchez, 51, were attending an A-lister studded fundraising dinner at the Pacific Design Center in Hollywood on Saturday night. It was hosted by the Los Angeles-based Baby2Baby charity which provides diapers, clothing and basic necessities to children living in poverty. The charity features a host of celebrity ambassadors, including Jennifer Garner, Gwyneth Paltrow, Amy Adams and Jessica Alba, among others.  It was initially thought that a larger donation of $1million had been submitted at the event and Page Six claimed that Bezos' donation had been met with groans, but Baby2Baby have denied there were groans and clarified that there was no $1million pledge.  The charity added that Bezos' $500,000 donation, in addition to his pre-event giving, made him the single largest donor of the event.    The Amazon owner first became a billionaire in 1998, the year after Amazon went public as an online bookseller and has since increased his fortune...

This might be the greatest gathering of world leaders in years, egged on by tens of thousands of angry activists, imploring them to do a deal. Yet it was two unelected nonagenarians who stole the show yesterday. For all the fine words from umpteen presidents, prime ministers and campaigners, none of them nailed it quite as deftly as the Queen. That followed a similar bravura performance from Sir David Attenborough. Summoning the wisdom which comes with being the longest-serving head of state on the planet, the Queen distilled the monumental task facing this summit into just a few words. 'For more than 70 years, I have been lucky to meet and to know many of the world's great leaders,' she said.  'And I have perhaps come to understand a little about what made them special. It has sometimes been observed that what leaders do for their people today is government and politics. But what they do for the people of tomorrow – that is statesmanship.' The Cop26 climate change summit in Glasgow was the delegates chance to be 'written in...
Fashion For Relief, the charity set up by Naomi Campbell, has hosted glitzy catwalk shows across the globe. But now the Charity Commission is investigating it for failing to file its accounts on time ‘and wider governance matters’, I can reveal. It comes five months after this newspaper reported earlier figures that showed it spent £1.6 million on an epic gala in Cannes in 2018, yet gave only £5,500 to good causes over 15 months. At the time, Fashion For Relief argued this wasn’t a true reflection, as often supporters make donations directly to the causes. It said last night: ‘Accounts were delayed due to Covid and the auditors. We are liaising with the Charity Commission and are confident of resolving this soon.’ Naomi Campbell walks the runway at Fashion for Relief Cannes 2018 during the 71st annual Cannes Film Festival at Aeroport Cannes Mandelieu in France Damson Idris, Adut Akech, Campbell and Stella Maxwell (pictured left to right) at the finale of the Fashion For Relief catwalk show London 2019  The power struggle between Tony Blair and Gordon Brown during...

Adele has wowed her fans around the world today as she finally released her first new track in five years - Easy On Me - which reflects on the pain she felt amid her divorce from husband Simon Konecki. But who is the mysterious old-Etonian and charity CEO who swept the singer off her feet and supported her through superstardom - before she began airing their dirty laundry in public?  Simon, 47, who was born in New York but moved to London as a child, attending Eton before going on to work in the city as a teenager, with stints at the Lehman Brothers and EBS. Having been nicknamed 'Swampy' by workmates, he left banking behind in 2005 and  set up the 'ethical' Life Water company, selling bottled English mineral water. He began dating Adele in 2012, after being introduced by mutual friend Ed Sheeran, with rumours circulating that their relationship began before the end of his first marriage to stylist Clary Fisher. The two welcomed a child, Angelo, in October that year. Adele and Simon married in 2018, but the...
This October, as Americans mark another Breast Cancer Awareness month, many organizations and advocates are looking for ways to support the cause. But there’s one group donors may want to avoid: The American Breast Cancer Coalition. Although it sounds like a noble charity, the ABCC is actually a political group—and rather than trying to actually address breast cancer, the ABCC appears to be a scheme to extract millions of dollars in donations, mostly from small contributors. In recent robocalls, a feminine voice claims the goal of the group’s fundraising is to “support legislators who will fight for the fast track approval of life-saving breast cancer health bills and breast cancer treatment drugs to the FDA.” But financial records on file with the Internal Revenue Service tell a different story, reviewed in a joint investigation between The Daily Beast and OpenSecrets, revealing payments to firms with ties to a multimillion-dollar “scam PAC” network. In May 2019, Bill Davis created the nonprofit, and the group quickly started raising money. In the space of two years, ABCC has brought in nearly $3.57...

Someone made me a coffee and I sat quietly, taking it all in. Now, as a volunteer, I see it from the other side. When women come in with depression or anxiety, we don’t think, in a patronising way, ‘Here’s someone to look after’. Dolly Parton's new TikTok account was banned by the app after it was revealed to be a fake created using a charity video she made for the site a year ago. Fans of the queen of country music were thrilled when the account appeared, putting up an introduction clip in which she was clad in a yellow top with patterned yellow and blue pants. 'Why hello, I guess I'm on TikTok! I just dropped in to say that it will be okay,' the 75-year-old iconic singer-songwriter said before singing. 'If I can do it, so can you ... I believe in you.'  But their hopes were dashed when the account was banned by the app, with a number of Parton's fans taking to TikTok on Monday to complain.  A spokesperson for the singer explained to NBC's The Today Show that an unverified user had taken an old video from Parton's Imagination Library website and 'doctored it' to create the @itsdollyparton account.

London (CNN)Prince Charles' staff will tell you he's at his desk every day, often late into the night, reading reports that come in from his many charities, and scribbling notes and suggestions in the margins before sending them back. Republican Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas said Sunday on Fox News that the Taliban had the Americans in a hostage situation. "In fact we have six airplanes at Mazar-i-Sharif airport, six airplanes, with American citizens on them as I speak, also with these interpreters, and the Taliban is holding them hostage for demands right now," McCaul said. "State has cleared these flights, and the Taliban will not let them leave the airport." A spokesperson told Newsweek there were unable to confirm whether Americans were waiting to board the planes to escape. "We do not have personnel on the ground, we do not have air assets in the country, we do not control the airspace—whether over Afghanistan or elsewhere in the region," the unidentified official said. Larry Elder, the GOP front-runner in California’s recall election to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom, has long trumpeted a libertarian view on the “welfare state” and its excesses, arguing private charity is a better solution than government programs. But the conservative radio host’s own nonprofit raised little cash and made no grants in the nearly two decades it was active, a Times review of its annual tax filings show. From 1998 through 2014, Larry Elder Charities Inc. raised about $20,000, according to public tax filings. It spent no money on any services, other than accounting, legal and filing fees to keep the organization in good standing. The organization has been suspended by the state since 2015 for failing to pay a filing fee, according to a spokesperson with the Franchise Tax Board. The IRS automatically revoked the charity’s tax-exempt status in 2018, three years after it stopped filing the required paperwork, according to IRS records. Questions about Elder’s aborted charity have emerged as he leads in fundraising and polls to succeed the Democrat Newsom if he is recalled. The foundation’s...
It was the personally signed $25,000 check that landed then-presidential candidate Donald Trump in hot water—the check that sparked accusations that he had bribed Florida’s top prosecutor, Pam Bondi, with funds from his charity. Much has been written about the suspicious timing of Trump’s 2013 gift to the Florida attorney general’s political campaign. But contrary to previous claims from Trump’s presidential campaign and company executives, new records acquired by The Daily Beast show that Trump Organization employees were explicitly told this was a donation to a political group, and emails show that Trump’s own executive assistant had met in person with Bondi’s finance director in New York City. In its 2018 case against the Trump Foundation, the New York attorney general noted how Trump broke the law by using his charity to fund Bondi’s political group. And the charity was ultimately dissolved after a state judge found Trump had “breached his fiduciary duty” to the charity in other ways, behavior that the AG’s office called a “shocking pattern of illegality.” The donation occurred just as Bondi was supposed to be...

LONDON (AP) — When global health officials created COVAX, a U.N.-backed effort to share coronavirus vaccines, it was supposed to guarantee the world’s most vulnerable people could get doses without being at the mercy of unreliable donations. It hasn’t worked out that way. In late June, COVAX sent more than 530,000 doses to Britain – more than double the amount sent that month to Africa, where fewer than 2% of the population is immunized. While poor countries joined COVAX to receive donated doses, higher-income countries were enticed to join as an insurance policy in case their private vaccine deals fell through. Most rich countries have declined to buy COVAX doses after acquiring enough shots through private deals. But some, including the U.K. and Canada, tapped into the initiative’s meager supply even after reserving most of the world’s coronavirus vaccines. The result is that poorer countries have landed in exactly the predicament COVAX was intended to avoid: depending on the whims and politics of rich countries for donations. “If we had tried to withhold vaccines from parts of the world,...

Johnny Depp has scored a major court victory in his battle to discover if ex-wife Amber Heard stuck to her promise and donated her $7million divorce payout to charity, Dailymail.com can exclusively reveal. Heard, 35, declared she didn’t want Depp’s cash after their explosive 2016 break-up and vowed to split the settlement between two good causes – the American Civil Liberties Union and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. But lawyers for the Pirates of the Caribbean star, 58, believe the gesture was a sham and have spent a year chasing exactly how much was donated. They filed a petition in New York Supreme Court for the ACLU to hand over documents proving Heard stuck to her pledge, after it refused to cooperate. Now a judge has granted 23 of the 24 requests in the actor’s ‘motion to compel’, meaning the organization must produce the paperwork relating to Heard’s charitable contributions. The only thing Judge Arthur Engoron refused was a request for documents relating to the actress’s role as a ‘brand ambassador’ for the ACLU. The judge ruled Depp ‘has satisfied the...
