The coaches have voted for the Pac-12 awards, with the results scheduled to be announced Tuesday. If you don’t call your shot ahead of time, why even bother. So here we go … Coach of the Year: Utah’s Kyle Whittingham. You could make a solid case for Oregon State’s Jonathan Smith and a semi-case for Washington State’s Jake Dickert (since he only coached a semi-season). But Whittingham led his team through tragedy and won the conference in dominating fashion. Perfectly fair to wonder what might have happened if the Utes had started Cam Rising all along, but that’s a mere quibble compared to the result: The Rose Bowl against Ohio State. Offensive Player of the Year: USC receiver Drake London. We pondered this category over the past few days and settled on a player who missed the final month of the season. It’s unprecedented call for the Hotline, but London’s two months on the field were extraordinary. And there wasn’t an obvious Plan B. And there isn’t a well-defined bar for how  many games are required for this honor. Most...
THE Prem big four have made mincemeat of their Champions League rivals. But across the rest of Europe it is the sound of falling giants that is echoing. 4Chelsea sealed safe progression against Juventus last time outCredit: Getty 4Ralf Rangnick's Man United will be in the round of 16Credit: Splash Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United go into the final round of group games starting tonight already assured of top spot, with Chelsea needing to match Juventus’ last result to finish first as well. It has been easy street for the Prem quartet - helping to extend English football’s huge lead at the top of the Uefa coefficient table. Yet while they can play pressure-free football this week, some of the continent’s traditional powerhouses are facing the unthinkable - not being in the knock-out stage when it kicks off in February. The biggest and most remarkable casualty of all could be Barcelona, who need to win in Munich tomorrow to avoid the likelihood of Europa League football after Christmas. Not since 2003-04, when they were knocked out of the Uefa...

And Oregon makes four. Four Pac-12 programs — at least four — will have new head coaches next season after Mario Cristobal left the Ducks in the dust for the lure of his hometown and the desire to rebuild his alma mater. Cristobal accepted the Miami job on Monday, three days after a blowout loss to Utah in the Pac-12 championship and two weeks after a program-altering, playoff-wrecking beat down by the Utes in Salt Lake City. In the wake of his departure, the Ducks will commence a search to hire their fourth head coach in seven seasons. By comparison, Arizona and Colorado appear stable. Oregon has the resources to attract quality candidates, but the administration and key constituents — really, the key constituent — should prioritize one attribute above all others: Stability. Don’t hire a coach with a deep professional or personal attachment to the Midwest or Southeast. Don’t hire coach who could bolt Eugene after a few successful seasons, as Cristobal has done, or after one mediocre season, as Willie Taggart did. This scenario has played out repeatedly,...
PASADENA, CALIFORNIA – OCTOBER 05: Head coach Chip Kelly of the UCLA Bruins runs on to the field before the game against the Oregon State Beavers at the Rose Bowl on October 05, 2019 in Pasadena, California. (Photo by Harry How/Getty Images) With Mario Cristobal seemingly bound to coach Miami, who could take over to be the next Oregon football coach? Here are a few options to consider.  Well, it looks like the Oregon Ducks need a new head coach. Mario Cristobal is apparently taking off for Miami in one of the most bizarre and controversial coaching searches the sport has seen in a very long time. Regardless of how it’s happened (and how messy things have been for Manny Diaz), Cristobal is headed to Miami. He’s no longer going to be coaching the Ducks. Oregon must now move on. The Ducks have a great program and there’s a ton of money available to move around in Eugene. Because of the financial backing that Oregon has, there’s no reason why the Ducks shouldn’t be able to go out and get...

Back in mid-November, when the Oregon Ducks still had eyes set on a possible national title push, some very influential boosters around the University of Miami football program identified Mario Cristobal as their leading candidate to become that program’s next head coach. College football expert picks and predictions for every conference championship game, including the SEC Championship Game between Georgia and Alabama. It’s Championship Week in college football, and despite a slew of early-ish action in the coaching and transfer market, we still have scads of potential fields for the College Football Playoff. Georgia is a lock, but the results of this weekend’s games could open the door for Oklahoma State and even a Brian Kelly-less Notre Dame. If Alabama wins, they’re in. If Michigan wins, they’re in. If Cincinnati wins, they’re in. If Alabama loses, but it’s a close loss, there is a chance they could get in as the first two-loss team, which would likely keep out a one-loss Big 12 champion Oklahoma State provided they beat Baylor, which they already did once this season. If any of the aforementioned trio of teams loses, then Oklahoma State is the likely fourth team in this scenario. If two of the teams lose, then there is a chance Notre Dame gets in despite head coach Brian Kelly leaving for the LSU job....
Six years ago Virginia and Virginia Tech hired new football coaches. While the Hokies enjoyed early success under Justin Fuente (the 2016 Coastal Division title and a 19-8 record in 2016-17) the Cavaliers appeared to be the school building slowly but surely (from 2-10 to 6-7 to 8-5 to 9-5 and a Coastal crown in 2019) behind Bronco Mendenhall. LSU football head coach Brian Kelly spoke at a Tigers basketball game the day he had his introductory press conference but his accent definitely changed. Brian Kelly’s abrupt departure from Notre Dame (four-minute speech to his former team included) has not made many outside of the LSU football landscape that happy with the new Tigers head coach. Thus, any opportunity to roast Kelly would be a gift to social media sent from above. And on Wednesday night while making an appearance at a Tigers basketball game, he gave the roasters the ammo they needed. Coming out onto the court, Kelly donned a purple suit in trying to endear himself to LSU fans. But that wasn’t why he’s being roasted — instead, it was for the fact that he, for some unknown reason, seemingly faked (or adopted, if you want a kinder term) an unnatural southern accent during his speech. A high school student gets assaulted. Their innocence is shattered; their life, forever changed. School officials learn about the incident. London (CNN)They are safe and alive, and have the prospect of new lives in the United Kingdom, but for 130 Afghan female football players and their families it's an existence still full of uncertainty. When the Taliban seized control in mid-August as the United States and Western allies withdrew their forces, women and girls were quickly instructed to stay home from work and school, and hundreds of the country's athletes went into hiding or sought to be evacuated from the country fearing reprisals.  During the last period of Taliban rule, women were banned from participating in sports, and by late August, Khalida Popal, the former captain of the Afghan women's soccer team, had urged players to delete social media profiles and burn their kits to protect themselves. "They are like a nightmare for my generation. They took over all of our country in one night. And after that night, we were able to see the Taliban on the streets. They were cruel. They didn't have mercy for anyone," 19-year-old defender Narges Mayeli told CNN. Mayeli is one of two Afghan...
As if having their offices raided by police investigating financial crimes wasn’t serious enough for Juventus, Italy’s most successful football team is enduring damaging turmoil on the field too. For nine consecutive seasons, Juventus won the Italian title being before toppled as champions by Inter Milan in May. Now the team is being booed by its fans as it slides down the standings. The jeering followed a 1-0 loss to Atalanta on Saturday that left the 36-time Italian champions in eighth place after more than a third of the season. It’s not about trying to regain the title now, just a scramble to avoid missing out on lucrative UEFA income with Atalanta seven points ahead in the fourth and last Champions League qualification place. Although it followed a dispiriting 4-0 collapse at Chelsea on Tuesday, at least a place in the round of 16 of this season’s Champions League has already been secured for February. Much uncertainty, though, hangs over its leadership in the coming weeks after financial police searched the club’s offices in Turin and Milan on Friday to...

USC football will enter a new era in 2022 with a fresh head coach. However, that head coach will have a tough task changing the culture in Year 1. The future of USC football is still very murky. Until the Trojans have a new head coach on board, no one can even begin to guess what 2022 will hold. Still, USC should return a bright young quarterback in Jaxson Dart or a productive veteran in Kedon Slovis to lead the offense. And they’ll still have talent. It looks like the Florida Gators have their top candidate to replace Dan Mullen as the Florida football coach. Keep an eye on Billy Napier. Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns head coach Billy Napier has seemingly been linked to every interesting job throughout the South that has opened up over the past few years. He hasn’t taken any of them, but he might just end up in Gainesville as the Florida football team’s head coach. Napier might just be the guy to end up as the next head coach of the Florida Gators. According to a report from Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel, Napier is the top candidate. He is evidently the favorite to end up in Gainesville and replace Dan Mullen.Florida football coaching search: Will Gators hire Billy Napier?Napier’s name has been connected to multiple coaching searches in the past and other teams have seemingly swung and missed in their attempts to land the Louisiana head coach. Will Florida be the job that Napier finally leaves Lafayette for? It seems very plausible. Napier hasn’t landed the best recruits ever, but he’s generally...

The 2022 Nebraska football schedule will give the Cornhuskers the chance to prove they can flip close losses into victories next season. Scott Frost staved off firing this season despite showing only marginal improvement, if that, as his team went 3-9. The best thing that could be said about Nebraska football in 2021 is they were competitive. They may have lost nine games but they were mostly close hard-fought battles. Eight of Nebraska’s losses this year were by eight or fewer points. They had a point differential of 0 in Big Ten games this year. They just had awful luck and didn’t know how to close out games. There’s something to be said for showing fight. However, Frost can’t fall back on “we tried” for much longer. The first year of Longhorn football under Steve Sarkisian was a mess. Will the 2022 Texas football schedule play out more positively? Hopes were extremely high for Texas when they hired Steve Sarkisian from Alabama. The problem? The Longhorns got more Washington Sark than Alabama Sark. They started 4-1 before things utterly fell apart and they lost six games in a row, beginning with a collapse against rival Oklahoma. After finishing 5-7 and missing a bowl game, Sarkisian, his staff and his team have a lot of work to do for 2022. RUSTON, La. (AP) — Louisiana Tech and coach Skip Holtz are parting ways after nine seasons that included seven straight bowl appearances for the Bulldogs. Athletic director Eric Woods announced Friday that Holtz would coach the Bulldogs’ final game against Rice on Saturday. “Skip and I talked and agreed it was time for a change for both parties,” Wood said in a statement. “Louisiana Tech owes Skip a debt of gratitude for his loyalty and dedication to our football student-athletes, our university, and our community over the past decade.” La. Tech is 3-8 heading into its season finale. The Bulldogs have not finished with a losing record since 2013, Holtz’s first year at the school. Holtz is 64-49 with Louisiana Tech, including 6-1 in bowl games. “This is the right time for me to evaluate a new start in my career,” Holtz said in a statement. “The past two seasons have brought additional challenges to our program, and I simply think it is time for someone else to have the chance to lead this special group of young...
Some LSU football fans are all-in on the idea of Lincoln Riley becoming the Tigers next head coach. With the LSU football program in the toilet, Tigers fans are convinced that only Lincoln Riley can save them. Riley has a cushy job leading the Oklahoma Sooners, but with the Big 12 powerhouse eventually joining the SEC, the time might be now to get out ahead of this thing. LSU has reportedly offered Riley a massive contract to replace Ed Orgeron in Baton Rouge. While some could see him leaving Norman as a bit of a lateral move, money talks and that is what it will take to pry Riley away. Wisconsin needs to go out Saturday and crush Minnesota. Right now, the Badgers are 8-3, we’re in first place in the Big Ten West and with a win over the Gophers, we’ll clinch a spot in the B1G title game. (RELATED: David Hookstead Is The True King In The North When It Comes To College Football) Everyone called Wisconsin trash when we were 1-3. Now, we’re one win away from playing for a Big Ten title. A bipartisan group of Congress members touring portions of East Asia spent part of Thanksgiving serving lunch to U.S. troops stationed in South Korea before jetting off to Taiwan - despite protests from the Chinese Embassy. Republican Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina was among the lawmakers serving vegetables, potatoes and turkey to some of the 28,000 American troops stationed in the country. 'Enjoyed serving our troops today,' Mace tweeted. 'Many of our soldiers haven’t been able to visit home or have their families visit them since the start of COVID. Incredibly important to give our men and women in uniform a heartfelt thanks.'   Democratic Rep. Mark Takano of California, chairman of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, was among the politicians who helped scoop food onto soldiers' plates and tossed a football with them. President Joe Biden also paid tribute to overseas troops on Thanksgiving while remaining in Nantucket for the holiday. Republican Rep. RALF RANGNICK had a painful introduction to English football 42 years ago –THREE broken ribs and a punctured LUNG. The new interim Manchester United manager, 63, played 11 matches for non-league Southwick FC during the 1979-80 season in the Sussex County Division One. 3Ralf Rangnick once played with three broken ribs and a punctured lungCredit: EPA The then 21-year-old was studying for a degree in English and PE at Stuttgart University but fancied keeping fit in amateur football when he spent a year at the University of Sussex in Brighton. Just 154 people watched the German make his debut as a 76th-minute substitute debut in a 3-3 draw with Steyning Town on October 13, 1979. But in his second match away at Chichester, Rangnick suffered a serious injury. Rangnick, speaking in a German documentary, later recalled: “I had direct experience of being tackled from behind. “I broke three ribs and one of them punctured my lung. “I was in hospital for three weeks in Chichester on a ward with 60, 70, 80 years old and I was out...
"I love you." … Alabama football coach Ray Perkins to kicker Van Tiffin moments after his 52-yard field goal as time expired to upset No. 7 Auburn, 25-23, on Nov. 30, 1985, in front of 75,808 at Legion Field in Birmingham. And I was in love at first sight at age 24. That was my first Iron Bowl in person. I was the Alabama beat writer for the Montgomery Advertiser, which had about half a dozen people covering the game. Tailback Bo Jackson gained 142 yards on 31 carries and scored two touchdowns against an Alabama defense with linebackers Cornelius Bennett and Derrick Thomas and despite – it was revealed later – two cracked ribs. He won the Heisman Trophy a week later. It was Perkins’ second straight win over Auburn and put his unranked team at 8-2-1, while Auburn fell to 8-2. Perkins had lost his first one as coach in 1983 after replacing Paul "Bear" Bryant, which somewhat explains the love part. Perkins then fell to 4-6 in 1984 for the Tide’s first losing season since 1957 –...
