NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) — Mackenzie Holmes had 14 points and 11 rebounds, and No. 4 Indiana survived a late rally by Miami to win 53-51 on Saturday night at the Baha Mar Hoops Pink Flamingo Championship. Ali Patberg added 13 points for the Hoosiers (5-1), who were plagued by turnovers, committing 24 in the game. Indiana led 39-38 late in the third quarter before the team scored 13 of the next 15 points to get some breathing room. Five different players, including Patberg, scored during the game-changing spurt. Her layup with 5:02 left made it 52-40. Miami (4-2) wouldn’t go away as Kelsey Marshall scored the next 11 points to get the Hurricanes with 52-51 with 43.9 seconds left. Marshall was hitting from all over, converting a three-point play and making two 3-pointers. Her drive to the basket made it a one-point game. Patberg missed a 3-pointer from the wing, but Mackenzie Holmes grabbed the offensive rebound with 13 seconds left, giving the Hoosiers another possession. Miami was forced to foul a few times to get Indiana into the bonus....
Chicago Bears coach Matt Nagy came into the Thanksgiving game against the Detroit Lions with uncertainty about his future with the organization mounting. Nagy was linked to reports earlier in the week that claimed he was going to get fired after the Lions game. ESPN shot down the report, saying Nagy was told the initial rumors were untrue. Regardless, Nagy and the Bears needed a win Thursday against the winless Lions and did just that. Who knows what the Thanksgiving traditions are in Matt Nagy’s household? But it’s a good bet that once the Chicago Bears coach returned home from Detroit on Thursday evening, he found his way to the liquor supply and poured himself a drink. Extra stiff. What a freaking week, right? And the tumult may be just getting started. After the Bears suffered a brutal home loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday and then followed with three days of commotion centered around the coach’s job security and grip on the locker room, Bears players regrouped just enough Thursday to sneak past the miserable Lions 16-14 at Ford Field. The victory itself was far from impressive. Miles from it actually, merely earning the Bears an “At least you’re not the Lions” medallion. But at the very least, it ended the team’s 45-day stretch without a victory, snapped a five-game losing streak and allowed Nagy some much-needed relief as he headed into a long weekend. “This is about the team,” Nagy said during a 10-minute postgame news conference....

It’s difficult enough choosing winners and point-spread coverers and upsets when there is one Thursday night game each NFL week. As for three, well, c’mon. Short breaks between games is ridiculously tough when there is only that one contest. And don’t get us started on how we feel about Thursday nighters overall. However, it’s Thanksgiving, and tradition calls for a feast at the table and a feast on the field. Except that there’s barely anything tasty on the menu for the early matchup of winless Detroit hosting Chicago. No matter, says Lions coach Dan Campbell, who has played in the holiday game for both Detroit and Dallas. “I do believe our guys still look at it as it’s a special thing,” he says. “Everybody is watching this game and everybody’s got their families at home and they’re all circled around the TV, they just ate or they’re going to eat afterwards. I think it still rings true that it is special. “And yeah to your point, to be able to get a win on that day — look to get...
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — The Miami Dolphins, after wins, change the wrapping on some elevator doors to display the most iconic image of their most recent victory. The current photo, installed early Friday: a touchdown that didn’t count. And somehow, it makes perfect sense. Robert Hunt’s touchdown that wasn’t in Thursday night’s 22-10 win over Baltimore is emblematic of what it takes for the Dolphins to win games right now — all-out effort is what will be required, with Hunt’s play certain to be the official example for the foreseeable future. “That speaks to the type of player Rob is,” Dolphins coach Brian Flores said Friday. “I think we have a lot of players like that. Effort is not an issue. I think our guys give great effort, with desire to work together and play for one another. I think that showed in that play.” The Dolphins (3-7) are off until Monday, the first mini-break for the team this season. They’re still well out of the playoff picture, but just found a way to win two games in a...

Let’s start with one thing that hasn’t been there every night: reliable goaltending. MacKenzie Blackwood merely played his third game of the 2021-22 NHL season on Thursday. If anyone needed a reminder of his potential impact: Blackwood pitched a 42-save shutout. The Devils haven’t gone pointless in Blackwood start yet (2-0-1). Blackwood wasn’t the only NHL goalie with a notable shutout on Thursday. Jonathan Quick kept the Kings hot with his 34-save goose egg. Zach Fucale only needed 21 saves for his. MONTREAL (AP) — Adrian Kempe scored on a sweeping move at 3:39 of overtime and the Los Angeles Kings extended their winning streak to six games with a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday night. Brendan Lemieux and Alex Iafallo also scored. Cal Petersen made 33 saves for the Kings, whose winning streak is currently the longest one in the league. Ben Chiarot and Jake Evans tallied for Montreal, which fell to 3-11-1. Jake Allen made 31 saves. Kempe’s fifth goal of the season was a great individual effort and it extended his goal scoring streak to four games. He took a drop pass from Andreas Athanasiou near his own blue line, skated into the Montreal zone, circle the net and then did a complete circle around the Canadiens’ zone. When he got to the blue line, he put on a burst of speed, skated around Evans, cut to the net and beat Allen to the corner of the net. It was former Canadien Phillip Danault’s first game back at the Bell Centre since signing with the Kings...
By Matthew Geagan, CBS Boston BOSTON (CBS) — The Celtics had trouble winning any game to start the season, let alone securing a “signature” win. That changed Thursday night in Miami. READ MORE: Patrice Bergeron Bursts Out Of Scoring Slump With Four-Goal NightThe Celtics doused a bucket of cold water all over the Miami’s hot start to the season, handing the Heat just their second loss and the first on their home court. The Boston defense was an asbestos blanket draped all over the Heat offense throughout Thursday night’s game, holding the NBA’s best scoring team to a season-low 78 points and just 34.6 percent shooting. Miami had won five straight games by 13 or more points heading into Thursday’s tilt, putting up at least 106 points in each of those wins. But the Celtics came in angry and took it out on the Heat, locking down Miami’s scorers while going ahead by as many as 26 points. And unlike Monday night when the Celtics blew a 19-point lead to the Chicago Bulls, this lead would not be relinquished. The...
The 1-6 Oklahoma City Thunder head to Los Angeles to take on the 5-3 Los Angeles Lakers at STAPLES Center on Thursday, Nov. 4 at 10:30 pm ET.  On Thursday night, the Oklahoma City Thunder will take on the Los Angeles Lakers for the second time this season. It will be a fascinating matchup, as their Oct. 27 encounter marked the Thunder’s only win of the season. The Lakers lost 123-115, and they were without one of their key players — which appears to be the same case this Thursday. LeBron James has been ruled out of the Thursday night home game with an abdominal strain, which is bad news for James as well as the Lakers. Their last game was a close one, where the Lakers edged by the Houston Rockets by a field goal for a 119-117 win. Both James and teammate Russell Westbrook were critical in that win, with James posting 30 points and ten assists and Westbrook posting 27 points and seven assists. Still, the Lakers are more talented than this Thunders team, who will be relying...

The 2-5 New York Jets take on the 3-5 Indianapolis Colts for a ‘Thursday Night Football’ match premiering at 8:20 pm ET at Lucas Oil Stadium.  Following different trajectories, the Colts and Jets share losing records despite success in recent weeks. Concerns are now emerging as to whether Colts quarterback Carson Wentz is the closer this Indianapolis team needs to make a playoff run. After an impressive win over the San Francisco 49ers, the Colts had a chance to move forward in the AFC South with a win over the Tennessee Titans. A Titans team without Derrick Henry was even easier to overcome, but in the fourth quarter and subsequent overtime, Wentz failed to put away the game. Instead, Wentz threw a game-ending interception on a poor passing decision, a harrowing indication of more picks and losses to come. Still, the Colts are heavy favorites against the Jets, despite the New York team’s upset win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 8. The Jets kept up with a Joe Burrow passing attack, winning 34-31 with Mike “White Lightning” White....
MONTREAL (AP) — Nick Suzuki had a goal and two assists, Jake Allen stopped 22 shots for his second shutout of the season, and the Montreal Canadiens beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-0 Tuesday night. Josh Anderson scored his third of the season and Brendan Gallagher added an empty-netter for the Canadiens, who had lost four straight — all on the road. Allen got his 23rd career shutout. Alex Nedeljkovic finished with 39 saves for the Red Wings. Montreal scored 2:06 after the opening puck drop as Suzuki got his first batting in his own rebound. Anderson doubled the Canadiens’ lead midway through the first period as he entered Detroit’s zone from the left side all alone and beat Nedeljkovic with a his shot from the faceoff circle. After allowing the two early goals, Nedeljkovic rallied in the second and third periods to give Detroit a chance at a comeback. With Tyler Bertuzzi (unvaccinated) and Dylan Larkin (personal reasons) out of Detroit’s lineup, the Red Wings couldn’t solve Allen. Gallagher’s empty-netter sealed Montreal’s second win of the season over Detroit....
SAN JOSE – The good vibes that surrounded the Sharks through the first week of the season feel like a distant memory as a four-game winning streak has now given way to a three-game losing skid. The Sharks allowed a first-period goal to Mike Hoffman and second-period goals to Alexander Romanov and Brendan Gallagher in a 4-0 loss to the Montreal Canadiens, who earned their first victory at SAP Center in over 20 years. The Sharks peppered Canadiens goalie Jake Allen with 25 shots through two periods, with 13 coming on the power play. But San Jose went 0-for-4 with the man advantage, continuing a cold streak that started midway through its just-completed five-game road trip. The Sharks are now 0-for-12 on the power play over the last four games. Allen finished with 44 saves as the Canadiens snapped their 12-game losing streak in San Jose, a skid that dated back to Nov. 23, 1999. The Sharks host the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday in the second game of a five-game homestand. The Sharks announced that...

He scored two goals (including his 200th career goal, which you can see below) and added an assist in the Oilers’ 5-1 win over the Arizona Coyotes to improve to 4-0 on the season. With three more points McDavid now has 11 points in the first four games of the season. That comes out to a 225 point pace over 82 games. Is he going to maintain that? No. Well, probably not. But he did have 100-points in a 56-game season so nothing should be off the table with this guy right now offensively. Shirtless Adam Levine shows off toned, tattooed body in Hawaii, more celebs in swimsuits and bikinis in 2021 Wright Brothers: Ohio mixes up commemorative license plate It wasn't a pretty Thursday night game, but the Cleveland Browns aren't in a position to turn down wins.  In fact, it might fit under the cliche of a character-building win.  One play from the banged-up Browns epitomized their 17-14 win over the Denver Broncos. Up 10-7 in the third quarter, they went for it on fourth-and-3 deep in Broncos territory. Case Keenum, pressed into starting at quarterback, tried to run for it. It looked like he was going to be stopped short. He made linebacker Curtis Robinson miss. Then he was hit by linebacker Justin Strand short of the sticks, but kept driving and somehow got the first down. A play later, the Browns scored a touchdown. That was the difference in the game.  It wasn't a majestic play. But it was a tough one and it got the job done, like the Browns on Thursday night.  © Provided by Yahoo! Sports...
KANATA, Ontario – Kevin Labanc’s second-period power-play goal proved to be the difference as the Sharks continued their perfect start to the season with a 2-1 win over the Ottawa Senators on Thursday. Labanc, set up near the top of the circle to the right of the Senators’ net, took a pass from Erik Karlsson and ripped a slap shot past goalie Matt Murray at the 14:36 mark of the second period for a 2-1 Sharks lead. Logan Couture also scored and goalie James Reimer made 30 saves as the Sharks improved to 3-0-0, their fastest start to a season since 2015-16 when they won their first four games. DENVER (CBS4) – The Broncos are in desperate need of a victory after having lost three straight games. Von Miller made a bold prediction on Tuesday. “I will play well in this game. This is exactly the way the Giants drew it up. Yes, they would have, obviously, preferred to win Game 4 and the NLDS vs. the Dodgers on Tuesday night, but the Giants head into a fifth and final game of the series in an optimal position. On the mound to start the game is Logan Webb, his devastating three-pitch arsenal, and the three Red Bulls he drinks before each game. Webb was marvelous in Game 1, going 7 2/3 shutout innings and striking out 10 in the process. The Giants could have pushed Webb onto the mound Tuesday on short rest, but with a game advantage, they wanted to set up a situation where Webb pitched the biggest game of the year, and arguably the biggest game in Giants-Dodgers history, which dates back more than 130 years. Ideally, the man who started this thing will end it. But because it’s 2021, it’s hardly expected that Webb is going to go nine Thursday. A Giants ace might finish the game, though. TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Tom Brady remembers the losses. As Tampa Bay (4-1) prepared to face the Philadelphia Eagles (2-3) on Thursday night, Brady pointed out a few times this week that the Buccaneers lost on short rest last season. That was when Brady forgot the number of downs at the end of a 20-19 loss at Chicago on Oct. 8. “You have these weeks and you put a lot into them in a really short period of time, like we have,” said Brady, who’ll play with an injured hand. “It’s like cramming for an exam, you know? You just kind of put everything else to the side and just focus on the game. … The good part is, if you win, the time on the back end is really helpful. But you’ve got to win. “Last year we lost, so we’ve got to play good.” The defending Super Bowl champions are coming off a lopsided win over Miami while the Eagles rallied to win on the road at Carolina. CINCINNATI (AP) — After rallying the Bengals to a late win over the Jaguars, Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow said with matter-of-fact confidence that he is getting better every week. The stats and his dauntless performances under pressure seem to suggest that it’s not just talk. The unflappable second-year quarterback, playing on a surgically repaired left knee, led the Bengals (3-1) to scores on all four second-half drives after falling behind 14-0 at halftime to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Burrow ended up throwing for a season-best 348 yards and two touchdowns in the 24-21 win Thursday night. He completed 25 of 32 attempts (78.1%) and is averaging nearly a 73% completion rate through four games. His 10.9 yards per completion against the Jaguars weere a season best. Although Tee Higgins, last year’s leading receiver, has been out with an injury, Burrow has looked to rookie Ja’Marr Chase, veteran Tyler Boyd and tight end C.J. Uzomah, who caught both of his touchdown passes on Thursday. The last Uzomah connection was one of the most important and demonstrated Burrow’s ability to adjust. On...

San Jose Sharks coach Bob Boughner has talked at times during training camp about wanting his fourth line to have an identity — something he felt his team lacked last year with so many players coming in and out of the lineup. He’s looking for guys that are not just reliable, but also hard to play against. Maybe Jeffrey Viel and Adam Raska can fit the bill Thursday, Viel got into a fight on the game’s first shift and his goal at the 9:05 mark of the second period proved to be the difference as the Sharks beat the Anaheim Ducks 3-1 in a preseason game at Honda Center. On the go-ahead goal, Raska chipped the puck into the Ducks’ zone and swept it over to Viel, who redirected it past goalie John Gibson for a 2-1 Sharks lead. While there were many that predicted that the Bucs would defeat the Cowboys easily, that was not the case, as it went down to the wire. Next: Cowboys get robbed by refs on Chris Godwin no-call
SANTA CLARA — The most eye-catching aspect of the 49ers’ practice Thursday wasn’t Trey Lance successfully executing a red zone series with the starting offense. It was what the 49ers showed with a defensive front suddenly showcasing all its celebrities on the red carpet. When Nick Bosa lines up on the same front with Dee Ford … and Samson Ebukam … and Arik Armstead … well, then offenses are going to be in trouble. It will take a savvy quarterback to diagnose that pass rush, which Jimmy Garoppolo did the first time that gauntlet of pass rushers came at him, so he quickly lobbed a pass to Trey Sermon against linebacker Marcell Harris. “Having Dee and Arden (Key) and Bosa and Samson available, we can do a lot of things,” defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans said of his pass rushers. “All those guys are very talented and you have unlimited options what you can do with those guys. “All are great talents and all are great rushing the passer. We want to utilize their strengths to...
September 11 Congressional Report Fast Facts Politico sold to German publisher Axel Springer Unless you were up way past your bedtime, you didn't see that the San Diego Padres lost again. But you could have guessed.  Wednesday night's loss was the toughest yet. San Diego lost a lead in the eighth inning, then failed to score a run in six of seven extra innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers somehow won 5-3 in 16 innings.  And with that the Padres, who loaded up in the offseason to make a run at the Dodgers, are a game back in the wild-card race. They're 2-11 in their last 13 games. They're somehow 15 games out of first place in the NL West behind the San Francisco Giants. And in a cruel twist, the Padres get to face Max Scherzer — the ace they thought they'd traded for at the deadline, only to have the Dodgers steal him at the last second — on Thursday. The Dodgers are -145 favorites at BetMGM.  The Padres desperately need a win, but can they get...
CALGARY, Alberta (AP) — Dominika Laskova scored twice and the Czech Republic beat Germany 2-0 on Wednesday night in the women’s world hockey championship to win Group B and avoid having to face the United States or Canada in the quarterfinals. Klara Peslarova made 12 saves to help the Czech Republic finish 4-0 in group play. Laskova tied teammate Alena Mills for the tournament goal lead with four. Laskova opened the scoring at 4:28 of the second period and struck again at 9:09 of the third. Franziska Albl stopped 27 shots for Germany (2-1). Germany will finish group play Thursday night against Japan (2-1). The winner will face the U.S.-Canada loser, and the loser will play the U.S.-Canada winner. Getty Cam Newton During a joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles, the New England Patriots‘ Cam Newton was the target of some heckling from one of Philly’s young linebackers, K’Von Wallace. Wallace dubbed Newton the “Checkdown King” for repeatedly taken shorter throws rather than going down the field during the competitive joint session. When Wallace heckled Newton originally, he’d done it from the sidelines. Wallace isn’t a starter for the Eagles, so he wasn’t supposed to be on the field with Newton during the session. However, after he tried to get into Newton’s head, the 2015 NFL MVP asked to stay in for a few reps against Wallace. On Thursday, Newton got the last laugh as he torched Wallace on a TD pass to Jakobi Meyers in the Patriots’ 35-0 blowout win over the Eagles. Cam Newton ➡️ Jakobi Meyers ➡️ TD! Trea Turner is on the COVID-19 list and we'll see how quickly he fits in with the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Meanwhile, Bryce Harper keeps creeping up the odds list.  Harper, who hit his 250th career homer on Thursday, might end up taking the NL MVP award considering everyone else seems to be hurt. Harper is +1200 to win NL MVP at BetMGM.  That ticket will appreciate in value.  Bryce Harper creeping up the MVP odds In the NBA, Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic won MVP in large part because of the injuries elsewhere in the league. BOSTON (CBS) – The first winners of the Massachusetts COVID vaccine lottery, dubbed VaxMillions, were announced on Thursday. A Darrell Washington of Weymouth won the initial $1 million prize, while a 15-year-old Chelsea High School student Daniela Maldonado won a $300,000 college scholarship. Fully-vaccinated residents in Massachusetts are eligible to sign up for the five drawings. People over 18 can win the $1 million prizes, while residents 12-17 years old can win college scholarships. Gov. Charlie Baker announced the first winners at a Thursday press conference. “Today is a pretty big day,” said Baker. Additional drawings will be held the next four Mondays, with winners announced each Thursday. Winners will have 24 hours to respond when the Department of Public Health reaches out, and if that person does not respond, they will forfeit the prize and another winner will be chosen. The state created the lottery to encourage more people to receive their COVID vaccine. About two million people have signed up so far. Compared to other lottery games, the odds are pretty good.
