DEAR JOAN: A topic of conversation at our most recent family Thanksgiving dinner involved this question: Can a fox attack a baby deer? I know what you’re probably thinking, that this family is nuts and you might be right, but a McDonalds Happy Meal is riding on the answer. Vicki Theotonio, Walnut Creek DEAR VICKI: At long last, I get to say a public thank you to my sixth grade teacher, Mr. Perea, who not only encouraged me to become a writer but taught me a valuable lesson about the difference between would and could, which is at the heart of the answer to your question. Could a fox attack a fawn? Yes. Would a fox attack a fawn? Unlikely. Foxes are not large animals, ranking somewhere between a robust house cat and a medium-sized dog. Their survival depends on a lot of things, primarily the attainment of food. To ensure success — killing their prey and not extending an excessive amount of energy-wasting effort — they go for animals that are smaller than they are. Any animals, including wandering...

WALNUT CREEK — In response to the recent mass burglary at the downtown Nordstrom , the City Council on Wednesday will consider spending $2 million in federal COVID-19 relief funds to shore up the police department. Most of the funding would go toward paying five additional officers to patrol downtown including the Broadway Plaza luxury department store that dozens of people broke into and ransacked on Nov. 20. Three suspects have since been arrested and charged with robbery and conspiracy in the crime, which was part of a rash of retail thefts that hit the Bay Area and elsewhere in California and the nation this month. The funding, made available through the American Rescue Plan Act for COVID-19 relief, would also pay for more security cameras and an additional drone to catch burglaries as they happen. The council also will discuss whether to send letters to Gov. Gavin Newsom and state legislators who represent Walnut Creek asking them to provide “direct funding and resources” to cities to fight organized retail theft. Although the council will need to justify how COVID-19...

Some Contra Costa County residents will find themselves represented by a new supervisor in the coming months following the approval of a redistrict map that reunified the city of Pinole, split up Concord and redrew the boundaries that divide Antioch and Walnut Creek. The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday unanimously signed off on the county’s five newly configured districts. Geographical boundaries are redrawn every 10 years to ensure that districts represent roughly the same number of people as reflected by updated population totals counted by the U.S. Census Bureau. As a result, a small northern section of Concord will be included in Supervisor Federal Glover’s District 5, which includes Martinez, Hercules and Pittsburg. The rest of Concord will remain with much of Walnut Creek and Pleasant Hill in Supervisor Karen Mitchoff’s District 4. During the last redistricting process a decade ago, the city of Pinole was divided between Glover’s District 5 and Supervisor John Gioia’s District 1, which also includes the west county cities Richmond and El Cerrito. The city will now be reunified in Gioia’s district. Walnut Creek will...

It’s time for bruschetta, bouillabaisse and branzino. La Fontaine, the French-Italian restaurant that has been a Mountain View fixture since 2013, has opened a second location in Walnut Creek, in the space formerly housing Burma Unique at 1375 N. Broadway. Before that, the cavernous dining room was home to Le Cheval for 11 years. This is the first East Bay location for La Fontaine owners Hasan Yildiz, who is the executive chef, and Eric Albuz, the general manager. Named after 17th-century poet and fabulist Jean de la Fontaine, the restaurant celebrates Provençale specialties, like a grilled octopus appetizer with giant white beans ($19) and entrees like pan-seared Mediterranean sea bass, or branzino ($32), alongside gnocchi, orecchiette and other pastas ($21-$31). Heartier entrees include steak frites, pistachio-crusted lamb chops and a half-pound Angus burger with caramelized onions. Walnut Creek has became the first Contra Costa County city to ban the sale of flavored tobacco products and electronic smoking devices in an effort to curb nicotine addiction among youths. The ban, approved unanimously Wednesday by the council, will apply to menthol cigarettes, candy vape pens and any other tobacco products that have a distinct flavor besides that of regular cigarettes. In addition, the policy will prohibit the sale of devices that convert tobacco into vapor for ingestion — a popular alternative to conventional, flame-lit tobacco products. The city will start enforcing the ordinance in five months. While the ordinance will ban sales for everyone, the council made clear that its intention was to cut off the supply of these addictive products to the city’s youth. Cherise Khaund,  president of the Mount Diablo Unified School District, said at Tuesday’s meeting that use of flavored tobacco and vapes are rampant among students. Many of the devices for sale come in radiant colors, often in the form of pens, highlighters and USB devices — items that can easily be masked as...
When Ben Seabury heard the news that the East Bay’s beloved El Charro was closing its doors after 73 years, he grabbed the family and rushed to the Lafayette restaurant for one last meal. With his wife, three daughters, aunts, uncles and the rest of the Seabury crew, they sat at their favorite table in the hacienda-style dining room, over enchiladas and tostadas, as they had for countless milestones over the years, lamenting how the economic hardships of the pandemic forced the longtime owners into bankruptcy. “Ben, you’ve got to buy this,” his mother-in-law said. And he did. Seabury, a Danville resident, owns several Bay Area restaurants, including Little Star and The Star, Italian-style eateries with locations in Albany, Oakland and San Francisco as well as Ben ‘N Nick’s, in Oakland’s Rockridge neighborhood. Together with business partner Jon Guhl of 1100 Group, Seabury plans to reopen the Mexican restaurant next month in Walnut Creek. But it won’t be the same, not exactly. Located inside the former Maria Maria at 1470 N Broadway, the restaurant will be called The Original El...
