Iraqis, of course, recognized President Trump’s clemency for the four Blackwater contractors who murdered 17 men, women and children at Baghdad’s Nisour Square for what it is. It is the latest reminder that they possess no rights, no matter how basic, the ascendant global superpower is bound to respect. The Iraqi Foreign Ministry, reacting to Trump’s Tuesday night pardons of four convicted mercenaries, expressed its outrage on Wednesday. “The ministry believes that this decision did not take into account the seriousness of the crime committed and was inconsistent with the U.S. administration’s declared commitment to the values of human rights, justice and the rule of law, and regrettably ignores the dignity of the victims and the feelings and rights of their relatives,” it said. The ministry said it would urge the U.S. to “reconsider this decision.” That’s unlikely. Nicholas Slatten, Dustin Heard, Evan Liberty and Paul Slough are now free...

New footage captured a pro-Trump convoy waiting on the side of a highway in Central Texas minutes before it swarmed a Biden campaign bus and tried to 'run it out of town'.   Historian Dr Eric Cervini, who said he flew down to Texas to help with the Biden campaign's bus tour, posted the video on Twitter of at least 50 vehicles waving MAGA flags sitting on the shoulder of Interstate 35 in Hays County on Friday afternoon.  'See all these pickup trucks with Trump flags? They were sitting along I-35, waiting to ambush the Biden/Harris campaign bus as it traveled from San Antonio to Austin,' Cervini wrote.  'These Trump supporters, many of whom were armed, surrounded the bus on the interstate and attempted to drive it off the road.'  President Donald Trump on Saturday tweeted another video of the MAGA train surrounding the Biden bus as it made its way...
Trump supporters in Central Texas were caught on video harassing a Biden campaign bus and 'running' it out of town Friday, resulting in the Democrats canceling a scheduled event there for safety reasons.    With Texas turning into a battleground state, Joe Biden's campaign had planned to hold an event in Pflugerville, Texas, Friday, as part of its effort to shore up support in the state. But, as the Biden bus and supporters drove towards Austin en route to Pflugerville, they were met by a convoy of Trump supports who harassed them and also allegedly tried to run the Biden bus off the rode.     These tactics have no place in Texas, my home state, and no place in America. Please vote. Donald Trump didn't initiate the Supreme Court's swing to the right. That's been going on for more than half a century. Night Owls, a themed open thread, appears at Daily Kos seven days a week In the midst of crisis, the happenings of the immediate moment all too easily overwhelm our ability to keep the overall picture in mind. When multiple crises unfold simultaneously, it becomes even easier to lose track of how we have arrived at our predicaments of the moment. On the judiciary front, Amy Coney Barrett embodies the dangers of the current crisis as it affects every wing of the Democratic Party, progressive activists of all races, genders, and missions, and the working class (anybody who must earn a wage to eat). It’s not just the 18th Century originalist meanings of the founders she wants to take us back to.  Adam Cohen has written a book to help us remember that this crisis has a...
Some Trump supporters in Democratic-leaning districts of Virginia, Wisconsin and other states say they feel maligned because of their conservative views. They are now banding together in convoys for solidarity. Here is what a ride on the "Trump train" looks like - and what it means for the nation. Scott Pio coasts through a neighbourhood in northern Virginia on a recent Sunday in his Jeep, a Wrangler draped in Trump flags. He waves at two women dressed in tank tops who are chatting in a front yard. They give him a hard stare. Pio, a 36-year-old software engineer, is hardly surprised. On weekends the president frequently comes here to play golf at his club, Trump National, and progressive activists gather in front of its entrance to protest his policies. Here in this Democratic-leaning part of Virginia, a Trump supporter like Pio (pronounced PIE-oh), gets a chilly reception....

BEIRUT (AP) — A missile exploded earlier this month near the convoy of former Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri while he visited a mountainous area in the eastern Bekaa Valley, a Saudi-owned TV station reported Sunday. Hariri’s office in a statement said most of the report carried by Al-Hadath TV station was “generally correct.” The blast reportedly occurred some 500 meters (yards) away from Hariri’s motorcade on June 17. Hariri was returning from a visit to the top Sunni cleric in the Bekaa valley, days after sectarian tensions and rare clashes in Beirut sparked by Lebanon’s ongoing economic and financial crisis, the worst in decades. Hariri, himself a Sunni Muslim, had resigned in late October following nationwide protests against the country’s ruling elite, who demonstrators blame for decades of corruption and mismanagement. Al-Hadath TV reported that the explosion occurred as Hariri’s convoy of some 30 vehicles was returning to Beirut...
OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso (AP) - Unidentified gunmen opened fire at a cattle market in eastern Burkina Faso, killing at least 25 people in the deadliest attack in a particularly violent weekend in the volatile country, authorities and witnesses said Sunday. In the country’s north, in a separate attack, a humanitarian convoy came under fire in Sanmatenga province, claiming the lives of five civilians and five security forces, according to a government statement. An untold number of people went missing. Both attacks took place Saturday. Violence linked to Islamic extremists, and the local defense groups and military fighting them, is surging across Burkina Faso. Some 2,000 people died last year, and large swaths of land are increasingly being cut off due to insecurity. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - You only get one shot at party planning for a 100th birthday and friends of Virginia James were not going to be thwarted by a miserable little virus. Flanked by Albemarle County Police Officer Paul Quillon’s motorcycle and Officer Katherine Kane’s Dodge Charger, more than two dozen of James’ friends cruised down Hillsdale Drive on the morning of May 26 to personally pass on greetings. They drove in single file past James’ RoseWood Village retirement pad, honking the horns of their poster-plastered, balloon-festooned and crepe-papered cars while waving like 6-year-olds at a Santa Claus convention.
