The new phone has received a radical redesign compared to the original device, with a large screen that unfolds from the inside of the device rather than around the outside. For using the phone while folded, the Huawei Mate X2 has a second screen on its outside, similar to Samsung’s approach with the Galaxy Fold series. Images of the phone were leaked ahead of its official announcement by Evan Blass on Voice . The Mate X2 launch event has only just kicked off in China. This being a Huawei device, the Mate X2 will launch without support for Google’s apps or services, which is likely to limit its appeal outside of China. Internally, the phone is powered by the company’s flagship Kirin 9000 chip, the processor that debuted in its Mate 40 Pro last year....

An Apple patent application published yesterday reveals an idea for a foldable smartphone that would include a “self-healing” display cover, allowing the device to repair dents or scratches covering the screen. The application, spotted by Patently Apple, was originally filed by Apple in January. As Apple wrote in the patent application, the proposed concept’s display would allow the device to repair itself without the user having to manually intervene. In theory, the foldable’s self-healing could activate automatically, such as when the device is being charged or on a predetermined schedule, and it would use heat, light, or electric current to repair a protective layer above the screen. The patent application also says the hypothetical device’s screen cover may include a layer of elastomer that can lose and regain its shape to keep the sensitive inner workings of a device protected. In theory, the material for this concept would...

The patent application was filed in January, but was published on October 1 on the USPTO website, 9to5Mac reports. "An electronic device may have a hinge that allows the device to be flexed about a bend axis," Apple wrote in its patent. "To facilitate bending about the bend axis without damage, the display may include a display cover...
SAN RAMON, Calif. (AP) — Samsung’s second attempt at a foldable smartphone will come with a $2,000 price tag and a few elite perks aimed at affluent consumers still able to afford the finer things in life during tough times. The phone, dubbed the Z Fold2, will include a VIP package that will provide access to fancy restaurants and golf clubs to supplement the device’s multipurpose design. When folded up, the device looks like most other phones. But when its interior 7.6-inch screen is opened up along its side hinges, it is quickly transformed into the equivalent of a mini-tablet. “It’s definitely a luxury device,” said Drew Blackard, Samsung’s vice president of mobile product management in the U.S. Samsung provided a glimpse of the Z Fold2 last month while unveiling other new phones that cost at least $1,000, but waited until Tuesday to provide details about how much it...
Microsoft has revealed that its first smartphone for four years, the foldable Surface Duo, will be released in the US on September 10 for a colossal $1,399 (£1,072).  The mobile device, first announced last year, unfolds to reveal two displays which can be used individually or together as a single 8.1-inch screen.  However, the Surface Duo doesn't sport a truly foldable screen like that of Samsung's Galaxy Fold, as it has a hinge down the middle of the two displays, allowing it to close like a book.  The device, which was unveiled by Microsoft in October, does not have 5G connectivity.  Microsoft has begun taking orders for the dual-screen Android device in the US, although a release date for the UK and the rest of the world has not been confirmed.  The Surface Duo will be a new rival in the foldable phone category, going up against the devices such as...

The device, codenamed “Passport,” is said to be explicitly referred to as being “foldable,” and is included alongside a list of all Pixel devices going back to 2017’s Pixel 2. As well as the foldable Pixel, the document also mentions a “lower end mid year device” called the Pixel 5A with a “Q2 2021” release date, and two other devices codenamed “Raven” and “Oriole” for “Q4 2021.” 9to5Google speculates these could be Pixel 6 models. Finally there’s the Pixel 4A 5G and Pixel 5, which Google pre-announced alongside the Pixel 4A earlier this week. Officially these devices are due to launch in the fall, but the document suggests they could arrive in October, consistent with a separate report from 9to5Google ....
