Dominic Thiem crashed out in the fourth round of the Australian Open after losing to Grigor Dimitrov The Austrian, the runner-up at last year’s event, fell to a tame defeat to Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov. Days before the tournament, over 70 enlisted players were forced into hard quarantine without the option of training after crew members in their chartered flight tested positive for Covid-19. Reports later revealed that several players had been among those infected with the virus. Even as tournament organizers were wrestling with the Covid fallout, another controversy erupted after a letter written by eventual men’s champion Novak Djokovic to Tennis Australia CEO...

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James said over the weekend that he plans to keep his decision private over whether he will get a COVID-19 vaccine. The NBA is hoping that vaccinations, becoming more widely available on a state-by-state basis, will help make the remainder of its season safer, but it will not mandate that its players be vaccinated to play out the rest of the 2020-21 NBA season. "That's a conversation that my family and I will have. Pretty much keep that to a private thing," James said. "Obviously I saw [NBA commissioner Adam Silver] had his comments about the vaccination. But things like that, when you decide to do something, that's a conversation between you and your family and not for everybody. I'll keep it that way." Getting a COVID vaccine is a decision that no active players have yet been forced to make, as Silver confirmed that none have been vaccinated...

There’s a covenant teams create with their fans when it comes to a rebuild. The process is going to be long and difficult — when you’re tearing it down and building it back up, there’s no way around that — but the promise is that, in the end, it’ll be worth it. The Giants aren’t at the end yet. They’re barely past the beginning of their rebuild under Farman Zaidi. But the signs are undeniable now — the Giants looked poised to make good on that promise. Reasons for optimism always show up in subtle ways at Spring Training. There’s the positive inning from a young pitcher or a developing hitter taking a walk after years of swinging at everything are good. Those little things should not be overlooked, but don’t make mountains out of molehills — every team has those in camp. Still, fans should take...

Last week, we took a deep statistical dive that asked a simple question: How hard is the 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass, really? The “island green” is an entity that comes with its fair share of menace, but is the reputation earned? What we found is that yes, it’s about as tough as they come in the subset of shorter par 3s, and that conclusion came with a lot of interesting data. As part of the numbers mining that led to that discovery, we were also able to pinpoint the greatest single-hole disasters in the history of the island hole—blunders that cost players a chance to win...

After leaving Neopets for a year, Amanda logged into her account and noticed that something was off. A bubblegum-striped tiger was crying and upset that she had left it unattended for so long. Neopets always tries guilt-tripping lapsed players like this, and usually it’s effective, but there was one problem here. This wasn’t Amanda’s pet. What was missing was Amanda’s Darigan Lupe — a dark purple canine with glowing red eyes and dragon’s wings. Amanda’s Lupe, who she nicknamed Klyko, is not a regular pet; it’s an “unconverted” Neopet that’s massively rare on Neopets. Klyko is devilishly cute, but that’s not where its value lies. Back in 2007, Neopets got an overhaul that changed the majority of its artwork. But some creatures, like the Darigan Lupe, kept their original designs, in this case retaining the old, static poses. The majority of Neopets’ pets were automatically converted to the new...

High school basketball players may soon have a shorter path to the pros and a six-figure salary thanks to a new league that already has the blessing of NBA commissioner Adam Silver. Overtime, a sports media company, has launched Overtime Elite (OTE) to target blue chip boys basketball prospects between the ages of 16 and 18 with the lure of a $100,000 salary, minimum, health and disability insurance, and some college tuition money. OTE players will be giving up their NCAA eligibility by joining the league because the college sports governing body forbids its athletes and any potential recruits from earning money off of competition or use of their their name, image, or likeness (NIL). Everyone has a story about falling in love with San Francisco. The City by the Bay captures the imagination with its history, quirks and architecture. The WNBA and the Players' Association have agreed to an opt-in process for this season's draft, the league confirmed to The Associated Press on Sunday night. Every eligible player who would like to make themselves available for the draft, which is expected to be held in April, must renounce their remaining intercollegiate eligibility. A player who wishes to opt-in must email the league no later than April 1. If a player is competing in the Final Four, the player has up to 48 hours after her last game finishes to let the league know if she plans on entering the draft. In the past, players who have run out of college eligibility are automatically entered into the draft. This became more of an issue this season when all the players were granted an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA because of the coronavirus pandemic. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS...
SINGAPORE (AP) — Defending champion Sung Hyun Park and top-ranked Jin Young Ko will join Inbee Park, Danielle Kang and Minjee Lee in the 66-player field when the HSBC Women’s World Championship makes a return at the Sentosa Golf Club from April 29 to May 2. Sung Hyun Park won by two strokes from Lee in 2019 and had planned to defend the title last year before the 2020 edition was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizers announced tournament details Monday, on International Women’s Day, saying health restrictions would mean attendance will be limited for the event to prioritize the safety of players and officials. “The players will notice some difference from when they last played and I’m confident The Tanjong will once again provide a true test of golf,” Sentosa Golf Club general manager Andrew Johnston said. “The tournament was greatly missed last year, so we look forward...
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan keeps the screenshot his daughters sent him as a tease one year ago. Now it’s a reminder of how quickly celebration gave way to concern and uncertainty in a week like no other. The photo is Monahan being interviewed by CNBC on Monday of The Players Championship to announce the tour’s new multi-billion dollar media rights deal, while the ticker on the bottom of the TV shows stock prices in the biggest free fall since the 2008 recession. The cause was Saudi Arabia slashing oil prices amid anxiety over the spread of the new coronavirus. “Being in a business news environment, it was overwhelming the morning, and here we are announcing our longtime media partnerships,” Monahan said. “So it was this juxtaposition of an incredibly exciting, momentous day for our players coupled with, ‘Wow, we have something on the...
The NBA All-Star 2021 Game seems more about business and less about giving the best-chosen players a platform to compete. This, because the game is already marred with many key players dropping out because of injuries that can be the result of a short season break and less time to rest. Lakers’ LeBron James is one unhappy man because of all the circus. Even before the voting for the All-stars began, it was sure that King James would top the popularity index. However, into his 18th season, that mattered less to the 4-time champion who vocally spoke against the idea of holding the event. NBA Commissioner has responded to LeBron James Recently, in an interview, the much-respected NBA Commissioner first put a full-stop on the idea of a possible Kobe Bryant logo. Then, he pressed on the fact that he sympathizes with LeBron James and respects his opinion on looking...

He can suggest and nudge but cannot exert his force of will on pressing issues. He’ll do his best on bringing up issues of diversity in the coaching ranks, knowing billionaires will do what they want no matter the public appearance. Silver can know what having an All-Star Game in midst of a pandemic in Atlanta will do for his league’s reputation, but is well-aware the NBA needs it for its financial bottom line. The mixed messages rightly made the public question its intentions considering the NBA positioned itself as some bastion of morality when it’s impossible to satisfy billionaires, partner with players and have a conscience at the same time. But Silver can maximize his capital...

We've made it to the All-Star break, and we're about to enter one of the most pivotal periods of the fantasy calendar.
