McDermott missed the team’s final game of the regular season, a 20-point win over Butler, on Saturday after he used a strange and racist analogy while speaking to his team after a loss last month. “Let me be clear: Coach McDermott’s use of the ‘plantation’ analogy was egregious and has absolutely no place in our society. His remarks have caused significant hurt to many on our campus and in our community,” athletic director Bruce Rasmussen said in a statement, in part. “Through his immediate apology, ownership of his actions, difficult dialogue with his team and more,...

BERLIN (AP) — Former United States coach Jürgen Klinsmann is enjoying the tranquility of Californian life after his brief but tumultuous time in charge of Hertha Berlin, and looking forward to a brighter future for American soccer. Klinsmann left Hertha in chaos in February 2020 when he quit the German club abruptly after 10 weeks as coach. A subsequent report he wrote for the Hertha backer Lars Windhorst, who initially brought him in as an adviser, caused a furor after being leaked to the Bild tabloid, which published incendiary extracts. Klinsmann wrote that Hertha’s management should be replaced immediately, and he blasted the players for not being willing to suffer for the club. “Everything that was written in the paper was true. It was just my summary for the investor. And now unfortunately a year after that happened, it proves to be right for a lot of other people...

The first mistake was not immediately suspending Greg McDermott. The second is currently being made: Leaving the suspension without clarity. Creighton owes it to its players to get this right. I’m not saying McDermott should be fired. But he should not coach again this year after his racially insensitive remark to his team following a loss at Xavier. McDermott, a fine coach and bright offensive mind, told his players, “I need everybody to stay on the plantation. I can’t have anybody leave the plantation.” I can’t imagine why he made such a callous comment that carries racist overtones of slavery. That’s besides the point. But the school has handled this extremely poorly. It let him coach at Villanova, and predictably his team was a mess, falling behind by as many as 22 points in a 12-point loss. Smartly, Creighton suspended him after that game, although that had a lot to...

Getty Browns receivers Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr. The Cleveland Browns are spending a pretty penny at the wide receiver position next season between Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry, but head coach Kevin Stefanski feels like his team is in a “good place” when it comes to their pass-catchers. Stefanski joined the Keyshawn, Will and Zubin show and discussed the future of Beckham and Landry in Cleveland. “I think we can, yeah,” Stefanski told former NFL receiver Keyshawn Johnson when asked if the Browns could keep both receivers despite their large cap hits. “I think you don’t want to be so dogmatic about it and say, ‘All right. Getty What’s it like to train Lionel Messi at Barcelona? That’s something assistant coach Alfred Schreuder knows all about since joining the club to work with manager Ronald Koeman and he’s offered some telling insight into what the captain is like on the training ground. Messi is not the most vocal player in the world, which has often seen his ability to captain the team called into question, but Schreuder has made it clear how influential the 33-year-old is at Barcelona. Schreuder recalled a recent training session involving Gerard Pique, who was recently back from three months out with a knee injury, in an interview with Maarten Wijffels for Dutch daily newspaper Algemeen Dagblad. This week was typical: we did a practice and Gerard Piqué had never done that with us. Piqué had been injured for a long time, so I wanted to explain to him what the...
BUFFALO, N.Y. I’ve learned a lot from Ralph,” he added. “But we both know that this hasn’t been good enough in terms of translating to success. We’ll assess everything.” As for his players, Adams questioned his team’s lack of competitiveness and passion. McDermott coached in the Bluejays' 72-60 loss at No. 10 Villanova on Wednesday night. Assistant coach Alan Huss will serve as interim head coach for the home game against Butler on Saturday. Athletic director Bruce Rasmussen said he and university president the Rev. Daniel Hendrickson met with senior administrators Thursday to determine disciplinary action against McDermott. “Coach McDermott and the team have accepted that, effective immediately, he is suspended for all team activities, including Saturday's home season finale against Butler.” Rasmussen said additional sanctions are under consideration, none of which will be...
Former Seattle Seahawks defensive back DeShawn Snead will return to the team this season as an assistant coach.  There will be a familiar face back at training camp for the Seattle Seahawks in Renton later this year that fans will surely be fired up about. While he won’t be suiting up as a player, Shead is getting ready to start the next chapter in his life and is joining the Seahawks as a defensive assistant/defensive backs coach. The Seahawks are bringing back DeShawn Shead as a defensive backs coachSeahawks head coach Pete Carroll has always had close relationships with his former players, so it should be no surprise at all that he’s welcoming Shead back to the Pacific...

Getty Lionel Messi clashed with Sevilla sporting director Monchi in the tunnel after Barcelona produced a memorable comeback on Wednesday to beat the Andalusian side 3-0 in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey. Monchi appears to have angered the Barcelona players by calling coach Ronald Koeman a “crybaby” after Saturday’s defeat to the Catalan giants in La Liga. Barca players spotted Monchi in the tunnel after the win on Wednesday and went to ask for an explanation. Tempers subsequently arose which led Monchi to tell Messi, “you always win the same!” The Barcelona captain replied, “you’re going home angry tonight,” according to Sique Rodriguez at Cadena SER. Barca progress to the final of the tournament 3-2 on aggregate after coming back from a 2-0 defeat in the first leg at Sevilla. BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Whoever becomes Barcelona president will have a hard time getting rid of Ronald Koeman as coach. The progress the team has made since losing to Bayern Munich 8-2 in August was evident on Wednesday, when Barcelona rallied past Sevilla to reach the Copa del Rey final with a 3-0 extra-time win. In the build-up to the second leg of the semifinals in Seville, Koeman called on the rest of team to step up and give Lionel Messi a hand in scoring goals. And although Messi was still the engine that drives Barcelona’s attack with his passing, dribbling and vision, it fell to three of his teammates to put the ball past Sevilla’s imposing defense. “This is my happiest night as Barcelona’s coach,” Koeman said after his team overturned Sevilla’s 2-0 victory from the first leg at Camp Nou last month. “We always believed. We have never...
Getty Dan Campbell looks on before a Dolphins game. Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell might come off as a tough guy in the media, but reality shows that he is focused and very thoughtful behind the scenes with his team and his staff. As a result of his kneecap soliloquy a few months back as well as the fact he’s gone off script a few times in press conferences, fans could be wondering what type of coach they will be inheriting in terms of decision making. Though Campbell sounds like the type of guy who might dig in, the exact opposite is true. While meeting with the media this week, Campbell was asked about the potential for disagreements between he and his staff. As he said, it’s not something that he is going to let become a problem because he knows when to take some steps back...

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — Dragan Stojkovic was hired Wednesday as coach of Serbia’s national soccer team, three weeks before the squad’s first qualifying match for the 2022 World Cup. The 55-year-old Stojkovic replaces Ljubisa Tumbakovic, who was fired in December after the team failed to qualify for the European Championship in the playoffs. Stojkovic was a skillful midfielder who made 84 appearances and scored 15 goals for Yugoslavia’s national team from 1983-2001. Stojkovic played for Radnicki Nis, Red Star Belgrade, Marseille and Verona before joining Japanese club Nagoya Grampus Eight in 1994, where he was coached by former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. After ending his playing career in 2001, Stojkovic coached Nagoya for four years before taking over at Chinese club Guangzhou in 2020. GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany (AP) — Schalke hired the relatively unknown Dimitrios Grammozis as its fifth coach of a turbulent season on Tuesday. The 42-year-old Grammozis — a former midfielder with 143 Bundesliga appearances for Hamburger SV, Kaiserslautern and Cologne — signed a contract through June 2022, the Gelsenkirchen-based club said in a statement. The German-born Greek coach takes over a team almost certainly heading for the second division. Schalke is last in the Bundesliga with just one win from 23 rounds so far. It is nine points from safety with 11 rounds remaining. “We are convinced that we have found the right coach in Dimitrios Grammozis for the last third of the season,” Peter Knäbel said in his new role as sporting director. But that stretch of success ended with a resounding thud this past year as the club dropped a 4-12 and third place in the division. Head coach Bill O’Brien was dismissed after a 0-4 start in 2020. This offseason has already been one of major changes. Nick Caserio is now the general manager and David Culley is the new head coach. In terms of player departure, 10-year veteran J.J. The specifics of Tuesday's report by The Athletic raise questions about when the two clubs became aware of Callaway's alleged sexual harassment of women. One Indians employee told The Athletic that Callaway's behavior 'was the worst-kept secret in the organization.' Furthermore, the husband of a woman with whom Callaway was allegedly having an affair says he...

BIELEFELD, Germany (AP) — Relegation-threatened Arminia Bielefeld hired Frank Kramer as coach on Tuesday, a day after firing Uwe Neuhaus. After being granted his release from the Houston Texans this offseason, Watt agreed to terms with the Arizona Cardinals on a two-year, $31 million contract. While the signing was lauded by many, one individual decided to take a moment to discredit Watt. A former Texans coach told Josh Reed of News 4 Buffalo that Watt was “selfish” and “only cared about his stats.” Not only that, but this anonymous individual claimed that Watt did more to hurt the Texans than help them and that they would not sign him if he were a free agent.
