CHICAGO (CBS) — So many people wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the tireless work by our health care workers, working days on end, putting their own safety and that of their families at risk. CBS 2’s Steven Graves reports on their stories. When you talk to these health care heroes, many quickly bring up the vaccine, and how thankful they are for it. But they’re keeping a close eye on dealing with mental health. Almost a year into the pandemic, the battle against COVID-19 is just habit now for Chicago doctors like infectious disease specialist Lisa Russell. “Just working day in and day out,” Russell said, adding that taking the time to digest the statistic of one million cases in Illinois is mind boggling. “(It) is astonishing and it’s difficult to put into words and think about the impact this has had.” She has broken down. “I mean,...

In a telebriefing held Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned against traveling to visit relatives and friends this Thanksgiving and holiday season and urged those with possible coronavirus symptoms or other illnesses to stay home. For those who do decide to travel, the health agency recommends doing so "as safely as possible," which includes wearing a mask while in public, maintaining social distancing and washing hands often with soap and water.  The Transportation Security Administration also issued a travel notice on Monday denoting which Thanksgiving dishes can be carried through security checkpoints and which dishes need to be checked in baggage. It turns out that most solid foods can be transported easily, while liquids are a bit trickier due to the TSA’s 3.4-ounce liquid container rule. FLYING FOR THANKSGIVING? Carry on the bird. Check the gravy. The TSA has two simple rules for flyers toting Thanksgiving family favorites: Anything solid can go through airport security. Anything liquid or spreadable can’t — and needs to be packed carefully inside a checked bag. “People are surprised that some travelers want to bring turkeys and ham on their flight,” TSA spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein told The Post. “Guess what? Turkeys can fly — and I’m not referring to spouses!” Fair warning from Farbstein: Anything carried on has to be put in a bin for X-raying, just like a laptop. Before any of this *waves hands around* happened, my mom was preparing for something big. I think she might’ve thought the next big earthquake was looming, but whatever she thought was going to happen, all she ended up buying in preparation for it was a can opener and a single can of Spaghetti O’s. Consequently, the Spaghetti O’s had a pop-off lid, making the can opener superfluous. I think the lesson here is that for some, getting prepared for an emergency can be as stressful as the emergency itself. For me, carrying around emergency gear has always made me feel a little strange. Thankfully, I’ve discovered a first aid kit that has everything you need to stay prepared, and it's sleek enough that you might even forget it's there. For starters, the VSSL is extremely cool looking, which makes it way more incentivizing to be prepared. It’s a red tube...

A LOOK BACK AT THE TRAGIC DEATHS THAT ROCKED THE 'GLEE' CAST McGregor continued: “There aren’t enough words to describe the pain we are feeling, we are truly heartbroken at the loss of @nayarivera.” “Naya, Cory loved you so so much,” his mother expressed. “He cherished your friendship more than you will ever know. As statues continue to be pulled down, buildings and vehicles continue to be targeted, and police remain under attack by angry rioters, it is important to speak softly and carry a good gun. The point is not about carrying a gun for offensive purposes but carrying one for self-defense, for ourselves and our families, just as our Founding Fathers intended when they wrote the Second Amendment. If you think I am forcing my own meaning on the Second Amendment please consider Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s majority opinion in McDonald v. Chicago (2010). Alito took the opportunity of writing that opinion to stress that “self-defense” is “the central component” of the Second Amendment. My mind was drawn to this important topic on Monday when Rush Limbaugh Show guest host Ken Matthews described the Second Amendment as a safeguard for rights that allow the weak to defend themselves when stronger or more numerous...
There are few things more exhilarating than zooming downhill on a bike. When I used to live in New York City, I rode my bike to work nearly every day. It was a healthy habit, and the daily exercise felt great! Only the snow would send me to the subway. There is no question, riding a bike is as fun now as it was when I was a kid. But it can also be dangerous. Accidents happen. Yet, there are simple ways to protect your children. Bike safety starts with the helmet Even before a child’s first bike should come their first bicycle helmet! In 1999, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standardized the safety features of bicycle helmets. Only use a helmet labeled with the CPSC standards for safety. A bicycle helmet should be worn every time your child is using their bike. A properly fitted...
