RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) — The artist who painted two now-unwanted murals about the Underground Railroad at Vermont Law School nearly 30 years ago asked a court to stop the school from moving forward with painting over them, but agreed to allow the murals to be covered for the moment. Sam Kerson, the artist, told a U.S. District Court in Rutland on Wednesday that he would allow the paintings to continue to be covered with a cloth while his lawsuit against the school continues, the Valley News reported. In July, the law school gave Kerson 90 days to remove the murals, which are titled "The Underground Railroad, Vermont and the Fugitive Slave.” In the meantime, the school said it would cover them. Students and others have condemned the artwork for its exaggerated and dated depictions of slaves and enslavers. Kerson claims that the federal Visual Artists Rights Act bars the school...

Reuters February 18, 2021 0 Comments A conservative women’s group cannot paint its own mural on New York City streets even after Mayor Bill de Blasio allowed a yellow “Black Lives Matter” mural to be painted outside Trump Tower, a federal judge in Manhattan ruled on Thursday. U.S. District Judge Lorna Schofield said Women for America First, a supporter of Republican former President Donald Trump, did not show that the city violated its First Amendment rights in rejecting its mural “Engaging, Inspiring and Empowering Women to Make a Difference!” The judge said the city may apply reasonable, viewpoint-neutral restrictions to street surfaces, which are typically reserved for signage to promote traffic safety and are not “message boards for private expression.” Schofield also refused to block the city from painting its own murals, saying it could pose “serious, potentially unwarranted limitations” on government communications with the public and was therefore...
The new owners of the house where Banksy left his latest artwork have been branded 'mean spirited' after boarding it up so it can't be seen.  The mural, entitled 'Aachoo!', appeared overnight in December on the side of a semi-detached property in Totterdown - on England's steepest road.  It depicts an elderly woman sneezing, creating the illusion that the force of the pensioner's sneeze had knocked over houses built above it.  However, Banksy's latest artwork, in his hometown of Bristol, has now been hidden from view after large wooden scaffolding was constructed around the external wall.  It is unclear why the boards were installed. The 'Aachoo!' artwork caused a stir last year when it appeared on the external wall of a £300,000 property which was due to be sold.   Despite the Banksy being valued at £5million, rumours that the owner had pulled out of the sale were quickly quashed.  The mural,...
