By David Lawder WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Last week, the International Monetary Fund sent $350 million in cash to the Myanmar government, part of a no-strings-attached emergency aid package to help the country battle the coronavirus pandemic. Days later, military leaders seized power and detained elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other elected officials, in what the U.S. State Department said on Tuesday constituted a coup. There appears to be little the IMF can do to claw back the funds, part of rapid-disbursing COVID-19 financing programs with almost no conditions and approved by the IMF board on Jan. 13, sources familiar with the payments and international finance experts said. "We are following the unfolding developments closely. We are deeply concerned about the impact of events on the economy and on the people of Myanmar," an IMF spokesperson said in a statement emailed to Reuters on Tuesday, confirming that the payment...
Days before leaving office, Donald Trump ensured that his extended family would continue to receive protection from the US Secret Service for the next six months, according to reports. The former president is said to have issued a directive to extend post-presidency protection to his four adult children - Ivanka, Don. Jr, Eric and Tiffany - and two of their spouses, who were not automatically entitled to receive it, according to the Washington Post. Trump also reportedly instructed that three key officials leaving government - former treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin, former chief of staff Mark Meadows and former national security adviser Robert C. O’Brien – also receive a security detail for the next until July, two sources said. Under federal law, Trump, his wife, Melania Trump, and their 14-year-old son Barron are the only members of his immediate family entitled to Secret Service protection after they leave office.  The...
JOE Biden is aiming to get 100million Americans vaccinated in the first 100 days of his presidency. The president-elect announced his coronavirus plan in a press conference on Friday afternoon. 1NINTCHDBPICT000630672539Credit: Reuters "The vaccine rollout in the United States has been a dismal failure so far,” Biden said. He admitted that "things will get worse before they get better." "And the policy changes we are going to be making, they’re going to take time to show up in the Covid statistics," he added. Biden said Americans will face "a very dark winter," but emphasized he's hopeful that high goals can help ease the clutch Covid has on the nation. "Truthfully, we remain in a very dark winter. Infection rates are up to 34%. More people are being hospitalized because of COVID than ever before. We're up to between 3 and 4,000 deaths per day." Biden said: "I'm convinced we can get...
Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski. AP Photo/David Richard The Cleveland Browns announced that five players and coaches, including head coach Kyle Stefanski, tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday. Stefanski will be unable to coach the team on Sunday against the Steelers when the Browns will compete in their first playoff game in nearly two decades. While several games earlier in the season were delayed due to COVID-19 outbreaks within a locker room, Sunday's game is unlikely to be moved, barring more positive tests. Visit Insider's homepage for more stories. Days after winning their way into the postseason for the first time in 18 years, the Cleveland Browns are dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak. On Tuesday, the Browns announced that head coach Kyle Stefanski and two other coaching staff members, and two players, had tested positive for COVID-19. Two days earlier, the Browns had played their regular-season...
While the first shipments of COVID-19 vaccine are on their way to the District, there are still some logistical issues to be worked out before any shots are given. “We won’t be able to start giving out the vaccine right away,” said Dr. LaQuandra Nesbitt, Director of the District Department of Health. According to Nesbitt, the hardest part of this isn’t getting the vaccine to the six medical facilities in the district that will be able to store them, it’s the work that has to be done on the local level. “While logistically the vaccine may be able to be deployed to communities within a day of the emergency use authorization approval, there are still other things that need to be put in place at the community level to ensure that vaccinators, health care providers have all of the information that they need to safely vaccinate the public,” Nesbitt said....
Google Fi will stop activating non-VoLTE phones in January, and encourage customers with older phones to upgrade with a $100 credit provided they purchase a new phone from the Fi store and activate it before December 31st, 9to5Google reports. Google’s hand is forced in the matter. Customers subscribe to Fi, but as an MVNO, Fi actually piggybacks on T-Mobile and US Cellular’s networks to provide coverage. Since T-Mobile has already announced its own plans to phase out support for non-VoLTE phones starting in January 2021, Fi has to as well. Requiring VoLTE all but assures 3G’s days are numbered VoLTE stands for “Voice over LTE”, which is the handling of phone calls over LTE data rather than older 3G tech. VoLTE calls are typically clearer, with fewer drops in connection, though they’re completely unavailable to older phones that only use 3G radios and even some early LTE models as...

The sailor who was missing at sea for two days before being rescued clinging to the bow of his boat has spoken about his ordeal for the first time.  Stuart Bee, 62, told the coastguard he 'thought "this is it"' after he was found 86 miles from shore off Port Canaveral on Florida's east coast on Sunday morning.  His boat had been experiencing mechanical issues before it sank but Bee had been asleep when 'water gushed in the back and forced him up to the front'. The crew of a passing 225-foot container ship named Angeles spotted him clinging to the bow of his 32-foot recreational boat, Stingray, which had capsized. The crew rescued him from the water and brought him back to shore. Bee, who is now making his way to back to shore safely with the crew who found him, added: ''I had been working on the engines, squealing noises and several...
Donald Trump on Sunday told Facebook to reinstate a New Jersey women's group with 29,000 supporters of the president after it was reportedly removed by the site.  The private group was taken down without warning or explanation, according to its directors.  '@Facebook Put them back NOW!', the president tweeted early Sunday morning.  DailyMail.com has contacted Facebook for comment. The CEOs of Twitter, Facebook and Google were all forced to rebuff accusations of anti-conservative bias at a Senate hearing last Wednesday.  Co-director of New Jersey Women For Trump, Priscilla Confrey, told NJ.com: 'Three days before Election Day? That is absolutely appalling. I just think these companies, these social media groups, have too much power.  'They offer to you to open up a group on their social media platform, and you could have 30,000 members, and they shut it down without telling you anything.' The private group was taken down without explanation, according...
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Voter registration has wrapped up in Pennsylvania with over 9 million residents registered to vote, which is a record. Now, election officials are turning their focus to ensure all mail-in ballots are returned on time and the election is safe and secure. “Look at the number of how many ballots have been cast,” Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar said, “and the high percentages compared to where we were at this time before the primary is a good sign.” With two weeks to go before Election Day, over 1.2 million mail-in ballots have been returned via mail and in-person. Boockvar says that’s proof that the system is working. “We are well ahead of the game now,” Boockvar said. “With two weeks left to go, these numbers will continue to grow.” 2020 Election Guide: Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware To ensure things continue to run smoothly, the state is...
A user on far-right message board TheDonald.win, was reportedly promoting several unreliable New York Post articles on Hunter Biden days before they were even published, according to the progressive watchdog group Media Matters for America. The Post claimed that they obtained emails from an abandoned computer that prove Hunter connected a Ukrainian businessman and fellow board member at gas company Burisma with his father and former Vice President Joe Biden. The emails were allegedly found on the hard drive of a computer that was left at a Delaware repair shop in 2019. The store owner then gave a copy of the hard drive to Rudy Giuliani, President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer — deeming any information on it relatively sketchy. Despite the fact that the story broke on Oct. 14, an account on TheDonald.win named “Freedom_USA_88,” which presumably references the “white supremacist numerical code for ‘Heil Hitler,’” was repeatedly posting threads that...
I went to Edge on the first Friday after it reopened, and I felt safe. Joey Hadden/Insider Edge is the highest outdoor observation deck in NYC and the Western Hemisphere located in the multibillion-dollar Hudson Yards neighborhood in Manhattan. The attraction first opened on March 11 and was closed two days later in light of the pandemic.  It reopened on September 4 with restrictions in place to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. We visited Edge and found it was spacious with many precautions like mandatory face masks, temperature checks, social distancing guides, and sanitizing stations.  Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

The owners of a historic restaurant in Minneapolis that was burned down by rioters told “Fox & Friends” on Monday that seeing the damage was “really emotional.” Charles Stotts and Kacey White, the owners of Town Talk Diner & Gastropub, said their restaurant was burned down three days before it was set to reopen for outdoor service after months of being closed due to coronavirus. “We first got a call on Thursday morning that one of our employees had biked down to see if everything was OK and she called us to let us know that the windows were broken out and the fire suppression system was on and it was a mess,” Stotts explained.
