Thomas Tuchel’s Blues will face a semi-final against Asian champions Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia or the winners of the preliminary tie between Auckland City and Al Jazeera of the UAE. 1Chelsea have been given the easiest route possible to become the Club World Champions next yearCredit: Getty They are then on course for a showdown with Copa Libertadores winners Palmeiras of Brazil in the Final, although the South Americans first have to get past Mexico’s Monterrey or Egypt’s African champs Al Ahly. It represents the easiest possible route for the Stamford Bridge outfit after months of uncertainty. Chelsea had been due to travel to Japan for the tournament this month. But Covid issues forced the planned hosts to give up the tournament and it was only in October that Fifa confirmed the matches will now be played in the UAE in February. It means that Chelsea’s scheduled Prem game at Brighton on February 8 and the London derby...
ZURICH (AP) — FIFA confirmed dates for the delayed 2021 Club World Cup on Monday, with the Feb. 3-12 tournament in the United Arab Emirates requiring Chelsea to postpone two Premier League games. The schedule was announced hours before the tournament draw was being made in Zurich. The seven-team lineup was completed Saturday when Palmeiras won the Copa Libertadores. Chelsea, the Champions League winner, and Palmeiras enter at the semifinals stage and then go on to play the final or a third-place game. Premier League leader Chelsea had been due to play Feb. 8 at Brighton and host Arsenal on Feb. 12. Those games should now be rescheduled. The tournament also includes African champion Al Ahly, Asian champion Al Hilal, CONCACAF Champions League winner Monterrey, Oceania champion Auckland City plus the host nation’s domestic title winner, Al Jazira. The COVID-19 pandemic has twice altered plans for the 2021 Club World Cup. It was originally to be the inaugural expanded edition in China in June and July. That launch was shelved by FIFA when the 2020 editions of the European Championship...

World chiefs were left scrambling for a replacement, with South Africa early contenders. But they were also forced to pull out because of the virus. And now Fifa president Gianni Infantino has confirmed the event will be held in the United Arab Emirates 'early in 2022'. That will only serve to add to Chelsea’s already jam-packed festive fixture list. The Blues will now miss one weekend set of fixtures, which could see their scheduled game at Manchester City on January 15 shifted until later in the season. Most read in Premier...
CARABAO Cup ties for the rest of this season will see both teams allowed five subs after a rebellion by the clubs. Managers were only allowed a maximum of three changes in the opening rounds and that was expected to continue. 2The vast majority of the remaining clubs in the competition voted in favour of the switchCredit: PA 2Dyche and Burnley are understood to have opposed the rule changeCredit: AFP But a letter from 14 of the 16 teams remaining in the competition brought a U-turn from EFL bosses. SunSport understands that the measure was opposed by Leeds and Burnley, who have consistently voted against the extension of the five-sub rule in the Prem. But the other Prem sides, backed by Stoke and Preston, forced the issue, which will come into effect from the last 16 stage beginning on October 25. The decision is a sign that the clubs believe they have the right to flex their muscles when player welfare is now being discussed as a live issue. It also means teams playing in the semi-final and final of...

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — South Africa is interested in hosting FIFA’s Club World Cup in December after Japan withdrew because of COVID-19, South African Football Association president Danny Jordaan said Monday. Jordaan told The Associated Press he would meet with FIFA secretary general Fatma Samoura in Lagos, Nigeria this week to get more details on what kind of bid South Africa must present to the world body to host the seven-team tournament. The Club World Cup will feature Champions League winner Chelsea and the other continental club champions. The league champion from the host country also gets a place. The South African Football Association must get government approval to hold the tournament and meetings with the sports minister were also planned, Jordaan said. “We’ll know our position by the end of the week,” he said. (CBS Baltimore) — Sedgefield Country Club, in Greensboro, North Carolina, is home to the Wyndham Championship, the last PGA Tour event before the FedExCup Playoffs. Sedgefield has been a regular Tour stop since 2008. But its relationship with professional golf, not to mention its rich history, dates back much further. Sedgefield Country Club formed in 1925, around the time famed course architect Donald Ross drew up sketches of his next masterpiece. Ross’s courses use the natural topography to help dictate the path of the course and play on it. They work on a sort of risk-reward system, challenging players to be a little aggressive and then offering scoring opportunities if they succeed. Sedgefield was no different. HUMBOLDT PARK — The Park District’s 16-inch softball championship officially returned Saturday after a decade away with a screaming line drive that nearly knocked food out of the hand of Luis Salgado, who was waiting to bat. The foul ball, crushed on the first pitch of the championship, banged off Salgado’s shoulder. But he didn’t miss a beat, taking another bite out of his alcapurria as the teams and the crowd watching at Humboldt Park let out a laugh. One of Chicago’s most beloved traditions was back after all — with its food, drinks, bruises, laughs and one very large softball that confuses people outside the Midwest. After 10 years away, the Park District revived its citywide tournament this year. It’s part of an effort to reinvigorate one of Chicago’s most traditional games. Interest in 16-inch softball — once a mainstay of local parks — waned in recent years, leading to the city shutting down the co-ed league. District officials brought it back in June for a double-elimination bracket this month. Tournaments once drew more than 30 teams to Grant...

It has been caught up in a series of sexism rows down the years. But the All England Lawn Tennis Club has taken another step towards gender equality. This year, for the first time, male and female players at Wimbledon are being offered the same towels. Traditionally, men were given two classic green and purple ‘Championship’ towels, while women received two ‘seasonal’ towels, which in 2019 were pink and turquoise. Players are now each given a Championship towel and a seasonal towel, which is blue and yellow this year. The club...

The Champions League semifinals are set and an all-English final remains a real possibility. Once again, Premier League clubs dominate the European game. PSG is also a formidable opponent, while Chelsea are a dark horse who have grown in strength after sacking their manager Frank Lampard earlier in the season. Anything can happen at this stage of the competition, but don’t rule out...
