One game remains to conclude one of the most tumultuous college basketball seasons in recent memory. There’s no denying the COVID-19 pandemic wrought havoc over the last calendar year, one that saw the abrupt cancellation of the 2020 tournament and several postponed or canceled games the season after. It has even affected the 2021 tournament, forcing VCU to go home without so much as a game under its belt. And yet, at the end of it all, we have a matchup between what are considered the best two teams in college basketball: No. 1 Gonzaga out of the West, 31-0, and No. 1 Baylor out of the South, 27-2. Ironically, this is a matchup college basketball fans were supposed to see earlier in the season; naturally, it was canceled because of COVID-19. Better late than never, yes? South Carolina’s season ended in heartbreak, while the Stanford Cardinal move on to the National Championship Game. Stanford will appear in its first National Championship since 2010. A hectic finish gave the Gamecocks two opportunities from point-blank range to win the game. Down by just one point, a USC steal led to a made scramble, with Gamecocks’ Brea Beal and Aliyah Boston missing from just beyond the rim in brutal fashion. COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Shane Beamer is usually thrilled to hit the field for spring football practice. South Carolina’s first-year head coach is even more excited that the focus is back on the team and not the up-and-down stretch he’s had since becoming a first-time head coach. The Gamecocks start workouts Saturday under Beamer, who was hired in December to take over for Will Muschamp. “Super fired up to be starting spring practice,” Beamer said. ”We’re a different-looking football team than what we were when I was hired in December. The family of a Pennsylvania woman shot and killed more than five years ago will finally get the closure they've been seeking, with an accused killer in custody. Jean Tuggy was found dead in her Pine Grove Mills home on Jan. 21, 2016, after having being shot twice with a 9mm pistol, Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro said. Tuggy's former Wegman's coworker, Christopher Kowalski, 35 was identified as a potential suspect sometime during the course of the five-year investigation, Shapiro said. Investigators later came to learn that Tuggy had developed a friendship with Kowalski, and he became romantically interested in her, Shapiro said. Kowalski owned a 9mm pistol at the time of the murder that he later sold, authorities said. That pistol was tracked to its new owner, who turned over the weapon to police.  Examination of the weapon revealed that it had many of the same traits as the weapon...

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — One of South Carolina’s most experienced forwards in Alanzo Frink will miss the rest of the men’s basketball season due to medical reasons. Gamecocks coach Frank Martin announced Frink’s status on Tuesday. The 6-foot-8 junior from Jersey City, New Jersey, has played in three games, all starts for the Gamecocks (3-5, 1-3 Southeastern Conference). Frink averaged 3.3 points and 3.7 rebounds in his three appearances. He has not played since South Carolina paused activities due to COVID-19 after a loss at Houston on Dec. 5. Frink played 54 games the previous two seasons and was expected to take a bigger load down low with the departure of last year’s senior Maik Kotsar. Martin, who has twice gotten the coronavirus including earlier this month, said Frink was in good spirits. The coach would not say if Frink had tested positive for COVID-19, but...
EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Northwestern added another quarterback last week when Ryan Hilinski announced he was transferring from South Carolina. If he makes as big an impact as Peyton Ramsey last season, the Wildcats will take it. Ramsey led the Wildcats to a 7-2 record, the Big Ten West championship and a Citrus Bowl victory as a graduate transfer from Indiana. Hilinski threw for 2,357 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions as a freshman at South Carolina in 2019. He lost a competition for the starting job last season after Collin Hill joined the Gamecocks as a graduate transfer from Colorado State, and appeared in just two games. Hilinski is involved with the “Hilinski’s Hope Foundation,” which aims to destigmatize mental illness among college athletes. The foundation was started by his parents Mark and Kym after his brother Tyler, a quarterback at Washington State, committed suicide in 2018. ___ More...

Cooper suited up for the first time this season and, despite playing in a losing effort, immediately showed why he was a consensus top-25 player among recruiting boards. Congress is scheduled to certify the results of the Electoral College when it convenes Wednesday. So far, at least 140 House Republicans are planning to object during the certification process, CNN reported. At least 13 U.S. Senators have said they plan to object to certifying the results. South Carolina U.S. Sen. Tim Scott is not among them. In a statement released Tuesday, Scott said that while he supports President Donald Trump's legal right to investigate and pursue legal action against any allegation of fraud, so far, no judge has found evidence indicating election results in contested states should be overturned. Washington — The joint session of Congress scheduled to occur Wednesday for the counting and certifying of Electoral College votes is set to be marked by high drama, as Republicans in the House and Senate have pledged to challenge the results from several battleground states. A group of at least 12 Republican senators have said they, along with more than 100 GOP House members, will object to the electoral votes cast in key states, charging their elections were rife with fraud despite no widespread evidence. But as the joint session nears, a growing number of Republican senators are breaking with their colleagues and plan not to sign on to their challenges. Required under the Constitution, the event has in the past been perfunctory: In 2017, the process of reading and tallying electoral votes spanned 41 minutes, and in 2013, the joint session lasted just 23 minutes, according to a report from...

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) — Some prisoners in South Carolina will soon be able to attend college for free. The South Carolina Department of Corrections says it is partnering with Claflin University, a historically Black private school in Orangeburg, to offer bachelor's degrees to people incarcerated in state prisons. The program is slated to start in 2021, according to an agency news release on Thursday. Claflin will offer the students degrees in criminal justice, psychology and organizational management, as well as minors and certificates. The program is part of a federal initiative to help prisoners earn university credentials. School and prison officials say the partnership will help give prisoners skills to return to society successfully. Copyright 2020 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
