Two ex-cons in their 60s were part of a ring that stole more than 30 work vehicles from victims in seven North Jersey counties, authorities said. Their end came in a quick succession of arrests that followed an operation led by New Jersey State Police -- and involving dozens of local police departments -- that was dubbed “Operation Cat Burglar.” Crew members in January began snatching work vans and trucks from owners in Bergen, Passaic, Essex, Union, Hudson, Morris, and Middlesex counties, state Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal said. They stored the stolen vehicles in a lot in North Bergen and brought them to scrapyards in Jersey City and Newark after chopping, he said. The thieves’ primary targets were catalytic converters. Installed in almost all gasoline cars and trucks sold in the United States since 1975, the highly-prized emission-control devices help remove nitrogen oxide and other potentially toxic pollutants from...

A Massachusetts firefighters union has taken down the “Thin Blue Line” flags it displayed on its trucks in support of police officers, following days of resistance to a town order asking for their removal. The black-and-white American flags with a single blue stripe were first affixed to the Hingham Fire Department’s trucks in mid-July to honor the two-year anniversary of Sgt. Michael Chesna's death. Chesna, an officer from nearby Weymouth, was attacked with a rock and shot with his own gun by a suspect in 2018, authorities said. The flags were left on display "in support of the law enforcement officers in our own community, as well as all law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line every day," the Hingham Firefighers Local 2398 said. But after a Hingham resident emailed town officials last week asking for the flags' removal, the city’s police and fire chiefs told personnel they would have to comply as the displays were in violation of a town...
HINGHAM (CBS) — The Thin Blue Line flags are no longer flying on fire trucks in Hingham. Members of the fire department watched as police officers removed them Thursday morning. The town had ordered the flags to be taken down after complaints about displaying political messages on government property. But the Hingham firefighters union refused to remove them, saying the expression of support for police is not political and it was a tribute to slain Weymouth Police Sgt. Michael Chesna. The union said in a statement “we did not want to risk the chance of having these flags removed from the trucks in a disrespectful manner,” so members of the Weymouth police union did the job instead. BALTIMORE (AP) — Thieves are using trucks as battering rams to steal automatic teller machines from inside local businesses, Baltimore police said. The thieves sometimes use stolen vehicles to force entry, crashing through storefronts to get at the cash, The Baltimore Sun reported. According to police, the crimes have continued on and off for months. During the course of one hour on June 27, three stores were hit in west, northeast and midtown Baltimore. The problem has reached the point that some store owners said they’ve taken to emptying the machines nightly, to limit potential losses. Nearly every case is captured on store video footage, but few have been solved and police can’t point to any particular initiative they’ve formed to take on the string of thefts other than regular sharing of information across districts. Police said they recovered DNA and fingerprints from some of the machines, but say it...
