Helena Frith Powell (pictured) said it would be foolish to give up a lengthy relationship for a 'bit of side salad' YES By Helena Frith Powell Would I ever trust Dominic West again if I were his wife? There she was at home with their four kids, when pictures emerged of him gazing adoringly at a besotted Lily James. Him stroking her cheek, snuggling up to her on a scooter (and, actually, what is a 50-year-old man doing on a scooter anyway?) In spite of all this, Catherine FitzGerald has decided she can trust her husband again. After a few consoling weeks in Lamu, an idyllic island in Kenya, she has agreed to take him back, on the proviso he never has contact with Lily again. I think she has done the right thing. Many women will disagree. They will see it as anti-feminist and weak, even foolish. They...
(AP/CBS4) — A middle school student has won a contest to name one of the world’s fastest supercomputers. The new machine will be named “Derecho,” after a type of weather event that can bring hurricane-force winds and heavy rains, the Boulder-based National Center for Atmospheric Research announced Monday. Cael Arbogast, a 13-year-old eighth-grader at Riverton Middle School in central Wyoming, submitted the winning name for the supercomputer that will be used to study phenomena including climate change, severe weather, wildfires and solar flares. It will be housed at the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center on the outskirts of Cheyenne, Wyoming. AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Hideki Matsuyama almost turned down his first chance to play the Masters. It was a month after a devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan, disasters that killed thousands and destroyed much of the region he called home in March 2011. He decided to play a month later, only because he thought it would lift spirits. A decade later, he lifted his country again — becoming Japan’s first man to win a golf major. Matsuyama’s one-shot victory over Will Zalatoris at Augusta National made him the Masters champion, easily the biggest moment for the sport in his golf-crazed homeland. “I can’t say I’m the greatest,” Matsuyama said. “However, I’m the first to win a major, and if that’s the bar, then I’ve set it.” He was the greatest this week at the Masters, bar none. History will say he won the tournament on Sunday with a final-round...

Joey Logano, one of the ‘non-dirt guys’ going into Monday’s NASCAR Cup race at Bristol, ran a brilliant race to win the Cup Series’ first dirt race in over 50 years. While many did not know what to expect ahead of the race, winning it was on every driver’s bucket list. Logano stayed out of trouble, got himself up the ranks in the race, and eventually held off Denny Hamlin to win in an overtime finish. The former Cup champion was ecstatic, to say the least, and gave his thoughts on the ‘special win.’ The Team Penske star expressed that winning at Bristol always feels good. Winning a dirt race there is extra special, just because the NASCAR Cup drivers are not used to running on dirt tracks, and Logano ranked Monday’s win among some of his best. A college basketball coach does not reach 900 victories without a lot of losing. Roy Williams walked away from the bench on the losing side 260 times, including in the NCAA championship game, on the brink of the Final Four and 56 percent of the time when he’s led the North Carolina Tar Heels into competition against Duke. We mention this not to undermine Williams’ impending achievement, but to underscore how much sacrifice goes into the milestone he will reach the next time North Carolina wins, the first opportunity coming in an impromptu Wednesday non-league home game against Marquette. Welterweight Mike Perry is a talented fighter who has had some incredible performances over the past few years. However, his antics off late have him reduced to a meme, and he does not help himself in that regard.  From his very public splat with Darren Till to appointing his inexperienced girlfriend as his sole cornerman in fights, Perry has made a lot of questionable decisions off late. Nonetheless, Perry still remains one of the top fighters in the welterweight division.  Despite the recent criticism, Perry is very confident of his prospects. ‘Platinum’ recently took to Instagram to make a case for him being the ‘GOAT’ in mixed martial arts.  His reason being, “Saw this thing, It was like, It was McGregor and Khabib’s opponent’s records. A Texas father who was pepper sprayed and arrested 'in retaliation' for filming his son's traffic stop has received a $200,000 payout. Marco Puente filed a federal lawsuit in December against two officers with the Keller Police Department claiming the cops used 'excessive force' against him when he filmed them arresting his 22-year-old son Dillon for a 'wide right turn' on August 15. When he refused to stop filming, one of the officers arrested Marco and pepper sprayed him twice.  Body camera footage of the arrests quickly went viral in the fall, with the lawsuit and public claiming Dillon was 'racially profiled' for being Hispanic in 'a failed attempt to find narcotics.' On Monday, Puente's attorneys Scott Palmer and James Roberts said in a written statement obtained by Dallas Morning News that the family is 'pleased to have this unfortunate and needless situation behind them.' This settlement will 'justly compensate both...

Democrats captured control of the U.S. Senate on Wednesday when Jon Ossoff defeated GOP Sen. David Perdue in a Georgia Senate runoff, in a victory that hands a major win to President-elect Joe Biden.   Ossoff, 33, knocked off Republican Sen. David Perdue, who had said he will back President Trump's effort to overturn the election results. His celebratory moment came as the U.S. Capitol was still being occupied by a mob of Donald Trump supporters who breached the building, with U.S. Capitol Police seeking to regain order while aided by National Guard forces. Although his win was being overshadowed by history-making events unfolding in the Capitol while Trump supporters sought to disrupt the count that will make Joe Biden's win official, it is certain to reverberate throughout Biden's tenure. With Democrats at 50-50 with Republicans, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will give Democrats a majority in the chamber.    That will allow...
Left tackle Trent Williams’ ability to share insight and tips became a staple through his first and perhaps only season with the 49ers. That carried over to his Zoom sessions with reporters — who named him this year’s winner of the Garry Niver Award on Thursday — but also to his teammates who’ve been eager to learn from an eight-time Pro Bowler. “He’s not the most vocal guy,” tight end George Kittle said, “but when you watch film and he explains why he blocks guys the way he does or how he uses his feet or hands, it’s really fun.” Williams’ fun is over this season. An elbow sprain will keep him out of Sunday’s season finale, when the 49ers (6-9) host the Seattle Seahawks (11-4). Free agency awaits Williams and likely a massive contract that should clear $20 million annually. What must the 2021 49ers...

There's no question that President-elect Joe Biden's November victory, now reaffirmed a satisfying bajillion times from the Supreme Court on down to state courts and by state legislators and the Electoral College—so much winning!—helped House and Senate Democrats in negotiating the coronavirus relief package. One that they all consider, and Biden himself declares, is just a "down payment" for what has to happen as soon as he's sworn in in the new year. Biden wants talks to resume next month for much more substantive aid, especially for state and local governments that Sen. Mitch McConnell has steadfastly shut out of picture since March. And that, of course, is and will be the problem next year: McConnell. No matter how long Biden and McConnell have known each other, no matter how vaunted Biden believes his negotiating skills are, McConnell has a vested interest in tanking the economy ahead of the 2022 midterms. A Michigan couple has been ordered to pay their 42-year-old son after they destroyed a collection of pornography and sex toys he valued at $25,000. The action may end up costing them more than $75,000. In the lawsuit Werking v. Werking, filed last year in Michigan Western District Court, David Werking said that, after a divorce, he had lived rent-free in his parents’ Grand Haven home for about a year. In August 2017, he moved out “at the request of local law enforcement,”  leaving many of his possessions behind. A few months later, his parents — Paul and Beth Werking — delivered some of the possessions he had been asking that they return. He noticed some items were missing. In an email, he said, his father told him: “We counted twelve moving boxes full of pornography plus two boxes of ‘sex toys’ as you call them. We began that day...

Biden was asked by late-show host Stephen Colbert if he takes it personally that many Republican lawmakers have not acknowledged him as the president-elect, even after the Electoral College vote on Monday. “No, look, they’re in a tough spot,” Biden responded, adding that a “number of them” have said to him, “‘Give me time, Joe.'” Colbert then pointed to Graham, asking if Biden believes they could “patch it up and work together.” “Lindsey’s been a personal disappointment because I was a personal friend of his,” Biden said. However, Biden added that he believes his incoming administration can work with Republican Congress members. “Once this president is no longer in office, I think you’re going to see his impact on the body politic fade, and...

Fierce and longtime Trump critic George Conway blasted the president for his ongoing, fruitless legal campaign to to subvert democracy and overturn the election, even as the Electoral College confirmed — yet again — that Joe Biden won the 2020 election. During an appearance on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360, Conway bluntly called Donald Trump “delusional” and called out his unyielding campaign of election lawsuits as little more than a fig leaf for  further milking his donor base to fund his post-presidenctial lifestyle. “What does it say to America that the voters have spoken and the sitting President of the United States refuses to, at the very least, did not acknowledge this?” Cooper asked of Trump’s deafening silence on yet another confirmation he will leave office on January 20th. “It says a lot about the president and less about the country,” Conway said. “It says three things about the president. Danny Garcia and Errol Spence Jr. Photo by Ryan Hafey/Premier Boxing Champions Errol Spence Jr. just wrote boxing's comeback tale of 2020. The American boxer was ejected through the windshield of his $300,000 Ferrari in October, last year, before the vehicle flipped multiple times in shocking scenes caught on CCTV. Spence was taken to hospital but escaped without any broken bones — just broken teeth, a twisted ankle, and a messed-up face. Dallas police slapped him with a DWI [driving while intoxicated]. Considering the wreckage and potential for mental trauma, there were questions as to whether Spence would be the same boxer he was before. But on Saturday, December 5, in front of 16,102 fans at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, he answered those questions in style with a comfortable decision win over Danny Garcia. "He's back," the former heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis said on the Fox Sports...

The news follows the networks’ call on Saturday that Biden had won enough states to pass the crucial 270 electoral vote threshold, and was unsurprising as Biden had maintained a more than 10,000 vote lead for the past several days, with remaining votes largely coming from Democratic stronghold areas. Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich predicted Biden’s official victory in a Fox Business interview earlier in the day, saying that it would be “very, highly unlikely” for Trump to pull ahead. Arizona’s 11 electoral votes put Biden at 290 to President Donald Trump’s 217. Only two states remain yet to be called, with Trump expected to take North Carolina and Biden expected to win Georgia, but neither of those states would change the end result. Biden’s win in Arizona breaks...
Tiger Woods looks very comfortable in a green jacket. One of the greatest golfers ever, Woods has made the green-jacket wearing tradition for victory at the Masters a pretty common occurrence during his career, winning the major five times. It looked like Woods might’ve been done winning at Augusta National Golf Club before his surprising win at the 2019 tournament. Woods sits one off the all-time Masters winner, Jack Nicklaus, who donned the green jacket six times in his career. Denny Hamlin is the final contender for the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series. Although he hasn’t won a Cup championship like Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano, Hamlin is no less talented. He proved it in spades this season when he bagged the second-most wins of the 2020 campaign. He has notched up seven wins in the current season, behind Kevin Harvick’s nine. This potentially makes him out to be one of the favorites for the 2020 crown. Hamlin will be extremely fired up since he is one of two drivers to not win a Cup Series championship. The closest he ever got to the crown was when he finished second in 2010, behind Jimmie Johnson. However, he has been in excellent form in the 2020 season, if his seven wins are any proof. When he finished 2nd in 2010, he had notched up eight wins during the season, and now history...

Back in 2012, Brad Keselowski clinched the Cup Series championship. Obviously, he went to celebrate his maiden title with a nice tall pint of beer. Though if anyone was being honest, the size of the glass indicated that it was more than a pint. By the time he went for his post-race interview, he was fairly sozzled. To make matters even more complicated, he kept taking large swigs from the glass, right on camera. Naturally, the chugs came back to hit him hard and the results were hilarious. “Pretty damn awesome,” Keselowski said. “I’ve got a little buzz going. I’ve been drinking for a little bit. It’s been pretty good, I can’t lie. Look at these guys behind me, they are pretty excited. I’m excited, it’s been one hell of a day, I’ve got one hell of a team ad it doesn’t get any better than this. Brad Keselowski enjoyed...
Defense Secretary Mark Esper has reportedly prepared his resignation letter in anticipation that President Donald Trump will fire him if he wins reelection.  Last month, a report suggested that Esper along with FBI Director Christopher Wray and CIA Director Gina Haspel were all on Trump's chopping block if he claims victory in the 2020 presidential race against rival Joe Biden.   On Thursday, three current defense officials told NBC News that Esper already has his letter ready if Trump beats Biden.  While it's not uncommon for Cabinet secretaries to prepare undated letters of resignation during a presidential transition, Esper is said to have started his letter because his name is reportedly etched atop the president's post-election list of officials who are expected to be pushed out. Esper is believed to have fallen from the president's favor over the summer when he rebuffed the idea of sending active-duty soldiers into the streets...
