There were some mild complaints after Thursday night’s reveal of the 2021 NBA All-Star starters, but this year’s lineups didn’t stir up much controversy. Outside of a close race between Luka Doncic and Damian Lillard for the final guard spot, the Western Conference starting five was easy enough to predict. Early fan voting returns showed the Eastern Conference group wouldn’t bring many surprises either.  NBA ALL-STAR 2021: Final results from fan vote As for the reserves? Now that’s where the All-Star selection process gets interesting. There will be snubs with only seven spots left in each conference (two guards, three forwards, two wild cards), but that’s always the case ahead of the All-Star break.  (Note: Sporting News did not have an official media vote for All-Star starters this year. Reserves are chosen by NBA head coaches, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a little fun here.) Eastern Conference All-Star starters Position Player...

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers have placed cornerback Joe Haden, tight end Eric Ebron and reserve linebacker Cassius Marsh on the reserve/COVID-19 list, putting the players’ status for the playoffs in jeopardy. The move also leaves the AFC North champions further depleted for their regular-season finale in Cleveland on Sunday. The Steelers (12-3) are already assured of finishing no worse than third in the AFC while Cleveland (10-5) can end an 18-year playoff drought with a victory. The team announced quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, outside linebacker T.J. Watt, defensive end Cam Heyward and center Maurkice Pouncey will not make the trip to give them additional rest ahead of the postseason. Kicker Chris Boswell and safety Terrell Edmunds are also out due to injury. Mason Rudolph will start at quarterback in place of Roethlisberger with J.C. Getty Ronald Jones celebrates with Tom Brady and company after scoring a touchdown against Green Bay in Week 6. Tampa Bay could get another boost for its red-hot offense soon, Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians announced on Tuesday. The Buccaneers activate running back and leading rusher Ronald Jones II from the reserve/COVID-19 list. Jones last practiced before a Week 15 win against the Minnesota Vikings when he broke a pinky finger according to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. Jones had surgery on the finger Dec. 15, and the Bucs placed him on the reserve/COVID-19 list shortly after. Jones moving off the reserve/COVID-19 list doesn’t ensure he will play against the Atlanta Falcons in the regular season finale on Sunday per ESPN’s Jenna Laine on Twitter. The Bucs have officially activated Ronald Jones from the reserve/COVID-19 list. That’s not a guarantee he’ll play against Atlanta though, but...
COSTA MESA (CBSLA) — Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Kyzir White was placed on the team’s reserve/COVID-19 list on Saturday. It was not clear if White tested positive for the virus, because a player does not have to be placed on the COVID-19 reserve. Players who have been in close contact with an infected person may also be placed on the list. White has started each of the their past eight games after being a reserve in the season opener. All 32 NFL teams began operating under the league’s intensive protocol Saturday, which includes: — all players and coaches must have a negative from the previous day’s testing before entering the team facility — all meetings are held virtually unless they can be held outdoors or indoors with a pre-approved plan — face coverings must be worn at all times at the facility, including on the practice field by all personnel...

New York Giants: David Mayo returns from injured reserve ahead of Sunday game By: Cay North October 17, 2020 ShareTweetFlipRedditThe New York Giants may be without Sterling Shepard for their Sunday game against Washington, but they do have one player making a possible return: David Mayo. Mayo hasn’t played at all this season but has been an important return that the team has been waiting on. That’s because Mayo was projected as a starting middle linebacker, and the Giants already cut Mayo’s competitor Ryan Connelly. However, the Giants’ website has announced that the Giants have both activated Mayo and expect him to play on Sunday. Obviously, this is an injury return that matters for the team. Blake Martinez, a middle linebacker, is one of the biggest additions of the offseason. But the player starting next to Martinez is a bit less certain. ...
Cam Newton has company on the Patriots’ COVID-19/reserve list. New England’s practice squad defensive tackle Bill Murray was placed on the COVID-19/reserve list Tuesday afternoon. As a practice-squad player, Murray would not have traveled to Kansas City for the Patriots’ loss to the Chiefs. His placement on the COVID-19/reserve list comes three days after Newton’s placement on the list Saturday morning. MORE: How long is Cam Newton out? The Patriots took extra precautions even in their travels to Kansas City, flying two planes to keep separate those players who’d had the closest contact with Newton. That shows they’d undergone the NFL’s contact tracing protocol after Newton’s positive test, which means if Murray was exposed to Newton, the Pats likely already know that. The higher likelihood is that a practice squad defensive tackle’s placement on the COVID-19/reserve list is isolated from the starting quarterback’s case. It’s also worth noting that...

Getty Cowboys CB Anthony Brown The football gods continue to taketh from the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys announced Saturday that cornerback Anthony Brown is being placed on injured reserve with a rib injury. Brown will miss a minimum of three games before being eligible to return. Like in the case of Amari Cooper, it’s somewhat of a mystery as to how Brown is hurt. The fifth-year defender was not listed on Wednesday or Thursday’s injury report. On Friday, though, he popped up as a limited participant, questionable to play in Week 2 against the Atlanta Falcons. Beat writer Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram theorized that Brown took “some friendly fire” during practice. “Must have been some hit in practice that has him on IR. Third player hurt by friendly fire starting with Gerald McCoy,” Hill added. A quietly solid cover corner, Brown logged all 73 defensive...
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans have placed their top draft pick, offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson, back on the COVID-Reserve list. The Titans made the roster move Sunday. They also added running back Senorise Perry and cornerback Chris Milton to the 53-man roster, while placing safety Dane Cruikshank on injured reserve. Cruikshank will be eligible to return after the Titans’ game Sept. 27 at Minnesota under the revised rules for this season. Wilson was the No. 29 overall pick out of Georgia. The 2020 fantasy football season is going to feel a little different thanks to the impact of COVID-19. The coronavirus has impacted every sports league in some way or another, and the NFL (and, by extension, fantasy football) is no different. Even though the NFL is still planning to play its season, the league has taken extra precautions heading into this year by giving players the option to opt-out, meaning they will not play at all, as well as creating the reserve/COVID-19 list, which is for players who test positive or are being quarantined due to contact with an infected person. Still, even if a player does not have the coronavirus, being put on that list could be an issue. With no preseason, any amount of time away from the team can be detrimental, especially for rookies or players in a new system. And, of course, if a player is placed on...
Getty Head coach Matt Nagy of the Chicago Bears. The Bears have just released another player, and with their recent roster moves, the team has managed to keep its squad at 80 players. The Bears just announced that they have released offensive lineman Dino Boyd, the second cut in two days after they released running back Napoleon Maxwell Sunday afternoon. Chicago brought Boyd in to provide some offensive depth, but they needed to get their roster to the 80-man limit after they activated a few more players off the reserve/COVID-19 list. Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford was placed on the NFL’s reserve/COVID-19 list on Saturday. The designation means Stafford, 32, has either tested positive for the novel coronavirus or was knowingly in contact with someone who has been diagnosed. League policy does not allow for comment on a player’s medical status. Lions players were tested Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, according to The Detroit News, having to pass all three in order to get access to the training facility. Stafford, who saw his consecutive starts streak end at 136 games because of a back injury last season, is the first starting quarterback to be named to the list. He is the eighth Lions player on the list, joining the likes of receiver Kenny Golladay and tight end T.J. Hockenson. The former No. 1 overall pick and wife Kelly, a cancer survivor, welcomed their fourth daughter, Tyler, in July. All four Stafford...
Detroit Lions, Matthew Stafford, #9 (Photo by Lachlan Cunningham/Getty Images) The Detroit Lions suffered an offseason blow As the NFL prepares to navigate the tough waters of playing a season amid the COVID-19 pandemic, another one of its stars has been added to the reserve list which could implicate him as potentially having the virus, or in close contact with someone who does have it. Lions QB Matthew Stafford was placed on the COVID-19/reserve list on Saturday. As previously mentioned, being placed on the list itself doesn’t necessarily mean Stafford has COVID-19. NFL teams are also not allowed to disclose whether or not the player has COVID-19, as that would essentially be giving away the diagnosis for future patients. What does it mean to be placed on the COVID-19/injury list?Of all the explanations offered, the Minnesota Vikings team website (ironically enough for Lions fans) actually describes the list fairly well: “A player...
