WASHINGTON -- The White House is trying to overcome diminishing demand for COVID-19 shots by offering businesses a tax incentive to give employees paid leave to get vaccinated. The move comes as the United States is set to meet President Joe Biden's goal of administering 200 million coronavirus doses in his first 100 days in office. With more than 50% of adults at least partially vaccinated and roughly 28 million vaccine doses being delivered each week, demand has eclipsed supply as the constraining factor to vaccinations in much of the country.Over the last week, the pace of inoculation in the U.S. has slowed slightly. That is partly a reflection of disruptions from the "pause" in administration of the Johnson & Johnson shot for a safety review, but also of softening interest for vaccines in many places even as eligibility has been opened to all those older than 16.As the vaccination program...

SANTA MONICA (CBSLA) — A new mom who was transferred to Providence Saint John’s Health Center nearly a month ago for COVID-19 treatment got to go home Tuesday and meet her newborn son for the first time. (Source: Providence Saint John’s Health Center) Natalhie Herrera, 35, was transferred to the Santa Monica hospital after giving birth to her son on Nov. 11. Hospital officials said she was seemingly losing her battle against the coronavirus when she arrived and was placed on ECMO — a machine that helps to oxygenate the lungs. Her son Felipe, who was born three weeks early, spent some time in the neonatal intensive care unit before being able to go home with his dad and big brother.

For astrologers, the next few days mark an event of almost unique significance and rarity. The last time it happened Henry IV was on the English throne and we were half way through the Hundred Years War. Up above in the skies, the great giants Jupiter and Saturn are moving from one zodiac sign (an area in the night sky) to another almost simultaneously. To have one of these planets switch signs is itself a big deal; to have two shift within days of each other is momentous. On Friday, Saturn moves from Capricorn into Aquarius and Jupiter follows two days later. Their 'Great Conjunction' — when both planets 'meet' in the sky — takes place on December 21, the longest night of the year, when the two will look like one conjoined star, dubbed the Christmas Star by some astronomers and the Solstice Star by others. The last Great...

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — In a year of virtual meetings and wall-to-wall Zoom calls, New York's Electoral College electors are still set to meet Monday the old fashioned way: in person. Gov. Andrew Cuomo, one of the state's 29 electors, said Friday that state law on the subject requires an in-person meeting at the State Capitol and that precautions such as testing, masks and social distancing are being taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The state’s electors — a group of prominent Democrats that includes Bill and Hillary Clinton, Attorney General Letitia James and labor leader Randi Weingarten — will be tested for the virus before convening in the state Assembly chamber of the capitol in Albany. The Democratic ticket of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris won New York en route to surpassing the 270 electoral votes required to take the White House. ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — The Martin Luther King Jr. State Commission and its executive director are failing to meet their fiscal responsibilities, according to audit findings released by State Auditor Brian Colón. Colón this week made public details of the commission's business operations for previous fiscal years. The commission has been on the auditor's at-risk list for consecutive years due to its failure to submit annual audits on time. “The executive director’s own responses to the findings state he has implemented procedures to resolve the issues, but to date we have not seen what those procedures are," Colón said in a statement. “As a result, it is deeply troubling these shortcomings continue to be repeated. The commission’s stakeholders deserve better.” Commission executive director Leonard Waites, who took over in 2017, vowed to provide the auditor's office with details of the policies and procedures by Dec. 21. In January 1968, Sergeant Rick Duggan did a double take when he saw his old friend, John “Chick” Donahue, standing in front of him. “Chickie!” Duggan exclaimed. “Holy sh-t! What the hell are you doing here?!” He had good reason to be confused. Donahue was a childhood friend from New York, where they played together as kids in the Inwood neighborhood. But their reunion was happening in Vietnam, more than 8,000 miles away. Weirder still, they were right in the middle of a combat zone in the Quang Tri province. Donahue, then 26, had served four years in the Marine Corps, but he wasn’t currently enlisted. This was pretty obvious to everyone, given his casual outfit of blue jeans and a plaid shirt. What was he doing there? “I brought you some great beer from New York,” he told Duggan. He wasn’t kidding. As Donahue explains in his new memoir,...

Book of the week  SEX WITH PRESIDENTS by Eleanor Herman (HarperCollins £20, 384 pp) The push and drive required to succeed in politics is connected, says Eleanor Herman, with other characteristics such as ‘impulsivity, restlessness, recklessness, contempt for the advice of others, and over-weening pride’. Indeed, presidents, prime ministers, kingpins and potentates can seem thoroughly bonkers, with their euphoria, wild mood-swings and ‘a denial that anything is wrong’. Nowhere is all of this more evident than in the bedroom — or in the case of Warren Harding, president of the United States from 1921 to 1923, the wardrobe, where he shut himself away with debutantes, actresses, wives, widows, prostitutes and teenagers, ‘to muffle the noise’. Power, vouchsafed former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, ‘is the ultimate aphrodisiac’. Donald Trump’s private jets, lewd remarks to and about women, and gold-leaf penthouse apartments are only the latest manifestation. Eleanor Herman...

A bill granting the newspaper industry an extra year to meet new labor standards was signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday, Sept. 30. Assembly Bill 323, authored by Assemblymember Blanca Rubio, D-Baldwin Park, gives the industry time to figure out how to mesh the state’s controversial Assembly Bill 5 with longstanding newspaper delivery practices. Originally, AB 323 offered a two-year grace period. The bill, dubbed the “Save Local Journalism Act,” passed the state Assembly 71-4 after gaining Senate approval, 39-0. Newsom’s approval came without comment. The newspaper industry faced implementing AB 5 limitations in 2021 while suffering harsh economic fallout from the pandemic as well as long-term challenges. Publishers warned that without AB 323 jobs were at risk and the creation and distribution of printed news editions could be cut. “It was grand effort, a must-win for the industry. But let’s be clear. GENEVA (AP) — Syrian government, opposition and civil society delegations were resuming meetings Monday in Geneva to discuss a possible new constitution — a step seen by the U.N. mediator as a prospective “door-opener” to a final resolution of the country’s devastating nine-year civil war. The U.N.’s Syria envoy, Geir Pedersen, is hosting the three, 15-member teams from Syria, while major regional and world powers — Iran, Russia, Turkey and the United States — are expected to be present on the sidelines during the week-long gathering at the U.N. offices in Geneva. With a fragile cease-fire largely holding in the rebel-held region of Idlib, Pedersen said last week he is hoping to build “trust and confidence” in a U.N.-led process that has produced few concrete results so far. The Syrian war broke out in 2011, leading to hundreds of thousands of deaths and the exile of millions from their homes....
