A woman has revealed how she gave birth to her first child at the age of 51 after conceiving the baby using an egg that was donated by her niece - defying doctors who told her she had just a five per cent chance of carrying her daughter safely to term.  Jake Leiske Willis, from Atlanta, Georgia, and her husband Chris Willis, 52, welcomed their daughter Avalon, now four, in 2017, via IVF, using a donated egg from Jake's niece Savanah, now 32.  At the time of their embryo implantation, doctors warned Jake that she had just a five per cent chance of carrying the child to term - however the stay-at-home mom defied their expectations, and now credits weekly acupuncture sessions and Chinese herbs for ensuring the safe arrival of her daughter.    But the couple faced an incredibly difficult struggle to conceive their baby girl, revealing that they went...

The right players are getting hot at the right time for the Rangers, but they’ll need everybody contributing to the cause to catch the Bruins for the final playoff spot. The Rangers trail Boston, which has two games in hand, by four points in the East with 11 games left in their regular season. They also trail the Islanders, who the Blueshirts will meet three times through the remaining games, by eight points. The Isles also still have three games left against the first-place Capitals. So there were the rookies, Vitali Kravtsov and Alexis Lafreniere, scoring one goal apiece to help the Rangers complete the sweep of the Devils with a 5-3 win Sunday afternoon at Prudential Center — a feat the team needed in order to hang in the playoff race. And Chris Kreider, who has been snakebitten as of late, kept the power play competitive with the first...

BERLIN (AP) — Leipzig had an injury-time winner ruled out through VAR and had to settle for a 0-0 draw with Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga on Friday. It was potentially a title-deciding decision. A win for Leipzig would have cut Bayern Munich’s lead to two points ahead of its tough game at third-place Wolfsburg on Saturday. Defending champions Bayern now have the chance to pull seven points clear with five rounds remaining after this weekend. Substitute Yussuf Poulsen thought he had scored in the 96th minute after heading in Marcel Halstenberg’s corner, but referee Manuel Gräfe reviewed video replays and determined that the ball struck Poulsen’s hand. It was Hoffenheim’s second consecutive scoreless draw after another uninspiring game against Bayer Leverkusen on Monday, but it was enough to lift the visitors to 11th on goal difference ahead of the rest of the 29th round. Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann, who...

Bukayo Saka says Arsenal have a real chance of winning the Europa League after their rout of Slavia Prague, and claims their latest performance “shows everyone how exciting we can be”. Arsenal bounced back from a disappointing 1-1 draw against Slavia in the first leg of their quarter-final tie at Emirates Stadium by picking up a comprehensive 4-0 victory in the Czech Republic on Thursday night. Saka was among the scorers as the Gunners booked a last-four clash with Villarreal, and he is confident they can now go all the way in the competition after flexing their attacking muscles at the Sinobo Stadium. What’s been said? “It was fantastic from start to finish. We did it for all the fans, they all deserve it for all the support they give us. We are really happy to progress,” the Arsenal winger told BT Sport. “We showed real character. The first one...
Goalie Josef Korenar will start his first NHL game Wednesday night when the Sharks play the Anaheim Ducks at SAP Center, but this likely won’t be his only chance this season to make an impression on the team’s coaching staff and front office. Even though the Sharks feel they have another promising goalie in the pipeline in Alexei Melnichuk, coach Bob Boughner said this is an ideal time for Korenar to take the reins of the team’s backup goalie role for the rest of the regular season. Melnichuk, 22, is in his first season of North American professional hockey after he signed with the Sharks out of the KHL last May. Korenar, 23, is in his third full season in the Sharks’ organization. “The plan is right now is Korenar is going to get his opportunity and hopefully he runs with that,” Boughner said. “Melnichuk is in...
EVERTON'S dreams of Champions League took a major hit with a first goalless draw of the season. AUGUSTA, Ga. — Phil Mickelson had been waiting for the kind of round he shot Saturday for a long time. He just wishes it had come sooner. Mickelson, for weeks, has been saying he felt his game is close to being sharp, yet it hasn’t shown in his scores. He rallied on Friday to make the Masters cut on the number at 3-over and in Saturday’s third round he posted a 3-under 69 to get to even par for the tournament. “For the first time in a long time I finally scored — like I shot a number that was equivalent or even better than the way I was hitting it,’’ Mickelson said. “This was a round, first time in a long time, where I scored, where I just kept saving shots and putting it in the right spot. “I didn’t really strike it as well as I did the...

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Next up on the long list of wannabes eager to stop, or even slow, the undefeated Gonzaga Bulldogs is a team basketball fans might have heard of: UCLA. In a strange twist that typifies a strange year, the legacy program with more national championships than anyone is a plucky up-and-comer this time around. The Bruins are listed as the biggest underdog at the Final Four in 25 years — 14 points — as they head into Saturday night’s game. And tiny Gonzaga — enrollment 7,300 with a dozen or so very talented basketball players sprinkled among them — is the behemoth nobody can seem to touch. UCLA is the fifth 11th seed to reach the Final Four, and joins the 2011 VCU squad as the second to get this far after starting in the First Four, the preliminary round the NCAA added when it expanded the...

Former astronaut Ed Gibson, the final person to leave NASA's Skylab space station, says he'd go back to space 'in a heartbeat' if given the chance. Gibson, a solar physicist, was in the first group of scientist-astronauts selected to go into space by NASA, making his only spaceflight as part of the final Skylab crew. The 84-year-old, who closed the door on the first US space station, told MailOnline: 'If someone wants to test the effect of zero gravity on tired old bones I'm available.'  He appears in a new documentary called 'Searching for Skylab' by director Dwight Steven-Boniecki about the first only wholly NASA operated space station.  Ed Gibson as he prepares for his first and only flight to SkyLab with Al Shepard, the first American in space Shower presentation by Alan Bean and Jack Lousma were part of the second crew to go to SkyLab, launching...
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Jameis Winston describes the prospect of taking over for retired, record-setting Saints quarterback Drew Brees as something that comes with a “tremendous amount of responsibility.” It’s also something Winston eager to do, albeit in his own way. “You be the best version of yourself,” Winston said Tuesday in his first media conference since returning to New Orleans on a one-year, incentive-laden contract. “That’s what Drew Brees would tell me: ‘You be Jameis Winston. You don’t have to be Drew Brees, right?’ “I feel that it’s a tremendous amount of responsibility, following up behind a guy like Drew Brees,” Winston continued. “But I embrace that.” Winston’s voice cracked and he swallowed hard as he professed how much Brees’ mentorship meant to him last season. And as if he were speaking to Brees directly at one moment, Winston said, “I’m just thankful that you showed me how...
Rangers winger Kaapo Kakko always likes to keep it simple when talking about his game. So in discussing how he broke through with his first goals since Jan. 22, the first month of the season, in the Blueshirts’ 5-3 win over the Sabres on Monday night, the 20-year-old pointed out that he was back on the second line next to Artemi Panarin and Ryan Strome. “I was playing with Breadman and Strome, so they can keep the puck, I just go to the net and they can find me,” he said. “That was my job [Monday night].” Acting head coach Kris Knoblauch said he opted to replace Colin Blackwell with Kakko on the second line at 7:07 of the second for a variety of reasons, but primarily because of how the Finn has been playing recently. It certainly panned out well, as Kakko converted six seconds later to knot the...

OLYMPIACOS took a 1-0 win at Arsenal on Thursday night but failed to truly punish the Gunners' missed chances. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Six months after Dan Hurley was hired to resurrect Connecticut, which had just gone through a messy divorce with Kevin Ollie, the former Wagner and Rhode Island coach landed the commitment that would go a long way toward helping. That’s when James Bouknight became the first player to commit to his first real recruiting class. Fast-forward a few years and not only does Hurley have the Huskies back in the NCAA Tournament, he has one of the best floor generals in college basketball leading the way. Bouknight has developed into a scoring machine, averaging more than 20 points a game, while leading seventh-seeded UConn into a first-round game against No. 10 seed Maryland. “He’s done so much for UConn basketball,” Hurley said. “His decision to come here has changed the landscape.” There are a lot of coaches that have similar feelings about their own backcourts. Being exposed to air pollution as a baby, or even while still in the womb, can increase the risk of developing hay fever as you get older, a study warns. Doctors from Medical University Hospital, Taichung, studied health data from 140,911 infants in Taiwan and satellite images of their home towns to track pollution levels.  They found that those born in areas with high levels of fine particles of pollution were more likely to develop childhood allergies to pollen - known as allergic rhinitis. The condition results in inflammation of the membranes lining the nose and typically involves symptoms including sneezing, itching and a runny or blocked nose. The condition doesn't cause serious health problems, but its symptoms, particularly if severe, can affect social life, school performance, and work life, authors say.  Study authors said they couldn't say why the link existed, but speculated it could be due to the fact...

Nate Lowe did notice a distinct difference about his first spring training in Arizona, now that the young first baseman is in camp with the Texas Rangers. “There’s no grains in the green, the ball doesn’t really hold the fairway all that well,” Lowe said Wednesday. “An extra 10% on your long irons … that’s something that I had to factor into my game.” Lowe then chuckled, and made it clear he was just joking. His focus isn’t on the golf course, but rather trying to become a starter for the rebuilding Rangers, who viewed him as an upgrade at first base when they acquired him from Tampa Bay in December. “We’ve been kind of targeting him for a while,” manager Chris Woodward said during a Zoom call from the team’s spring training facility in Surprise, Arizona. “He does a lot of the things that we want out of...

ARSENAL star Thomas Partey's continuous injury problems could be because he is trying too hard to impress, according to a top doctor. The £45million signing from Atletico Madrid missed the Gunners' 4-2 win against Leeds at the weekend and is set for two weeks on the sidelines. 1Thomas Partey is set for another spell out injuredCredit: Kevin Quigley-The Daily Mail Partey, 27, missed just six games in his five years with Atletico through injury, but this season he has already sat out NINE games with niggles. And Dr Rajpal Brar believes a combination of an 'unprecedented' hectic schedule and the player's desire to get off to a flier in North London have contributed to his injury. Speaking to Football.London, Dr Brar said: "In terms of the hamstring injury, it can be a sensitive injury because of the load placed on it but sounds like a grade one injury. "First, we...
New York Giants: CBS Sports mock draft predicts DeVonta Smith falling to 11 By: Cay North February 16, 2021 ShareTweetFlipRedditThere’s a lot of reasons why the New York Giants would want DeVonta Smith, but they may have a hard time getting the receiver at their current spot. Smith is the current Heisman winner and one of few receivers to pull off the accomplishment, and the Giants look like one of the best fits for him in the NFL – but other teams seem likely to take the Alabama receiver first. CBS Sports, however, has predicted a different course. Their latest mock draft has the Giants taking Smith at number 11, after LSU’s Ja’Marr Chase is the first receiver off the board. The Giants have a lot of needs — edge rusher, cornerback, offensive lineman, tight end — but it’s hard to...
President Biden is spending his first weekend at Camp David as commander in chief. The historic spread in Western Maryland has been used by White House predecessors since Harry Truman as a retreat from the media and D.C. swamp. “It provides a chance to get a blast of fresh air away from the press and a chance to be with family and friends,” presidential historian Douglas Brinkley told Reuters . In addition to R&R, the location has also been used for high-stakes international politics. It was on the grounds of Camp David that President Carter hammered out the 1978 Camp David Accords between Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin. Foreign leaders have regularly taken up residence at the location when they’re in town. Former President Trump, who liked to gold on weekends, made only two visits to the historic location during his presidency.

Anthony Bitetto was 4 years old when the New York Rangers won the Stanley Cup in 1994. And as the clock ran out and his family of lifelong, diehard fans that bled Rangers blue realized the title was officially theirs, all of them sprinted outside to celebrate and shoot off fireworks into the Island Park sky. His mom, Marie, and his dad, Brian, were among the first in line for the championship parade in New York City on June 17, leaving their three hockey-loving sons at home with their grandparents so that they could enjoy what was a monumental day in their fandom. “I thought that was the best day of my life,” Marie told The Post over the phone Saturday. “But to see your son score a goal for the New York Rangers …” Well, that instantly shot to the top of Marie’s list of her all-time favorite moments...
A slice of public land that would be designated wilderness by the Red Rock Wilderness Act. Earth Matters is a weekly compendium of wonderful, disturbing, and hideous news briefs about the environment. RED ROCK WILDERNESS ACT FINALLY STANDS A CHANCE For 32 years, environmental advocates have sought to designate as wilderness 9 million acres of unspoiled public land in Utah. Even though the concept of the Red Rock Wilderness Act was first introduced as a 1989 bill by a Democratic representative in the state, it got no traction from Utah’s mostly Republican congressional delegation then, or in the decades since, as other lawmakers have introduced versions of the original bill. In the last session of Congress, Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin of Illinois and California Rep. Alan Lowenthal proposed establishing wilderness areas in the Great Basin, Grand Staircase-Escalante, Glen Canyon, Moab-La Sal Canyons, and the San Rafael Swell. Given the Biden-Harris administration’s “30 by 30” pledge to conserve 30%...

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A New Jersey man is learning how to smile and pick up a pencil again after a rare surgery to replace his face and hands. In July 2018, 22-year-old Joe Dimeo, of Clark, New Jersey, was involved in a car accident that completely derailed his life. “I was coming home from work, from a nightshift. I guess I fell asleep on the steering wheel and just rolled off the road. My car flipped and caught on fire,” Dimeo said. He suffered third degrees burns on 80% of his body and had to be placed in a medically induced coma for three months. His eyelids, ears, nose and lips were literally melted away, and doctors had to amputate his fingers. He underwent 20 reconstructive surgeries before becoming the recipient of the world’s first successful face and double hand transplant. Doctors say his transformation has been remarkable. “I...

(CNN)It's been more than two years since Joe Dimeo could smile. In July 2018, Dimeo, 20 at the time, fell asleep at the wheel of his car on Route 22 in New Jersey. He lost control, and the car hit the curb, flipping over before bursting into flames. A passerby pulled him out of the car before it exploded, but Dimeo still suffered third-degree burns over nearly 80% of his body. The damage was so severe that, though Dimeo survived, he was left without eyelids, ears and much of his fingers. He also had severe scarring on his face and neck that limited his range of motion. The scars even partially covered his eyes. His independence had been taken from him in an instant. LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Liverpool’s Premier League title defense was on the brink of collapse after a 1-0 loss at home to Brighton on Wednesday, giving the champions back-to-back defeats at Anfield after a 68-match unbeaten run at their stadium. That four-year undefeated streak was ended by Burnley two weeks ago and it was a similar story against Brighton as Liverpool dominated possession but lacked a cutting edge. The visitors created the better of the chances and Steven Alzate seized the moment with his first Premier League goal, a scruffy effort from close range 11 minutes into the second half. Liverpool, which has dropped points against five of the bottom six, was without goalkeeper Alisson Becker because of a non-COVID-related illness but the concerns were at the other end of the pitch, where Sadio Mane was also missing with a muscle injury. Klopp’s wait for a 100th win at Anfield...
NEW YORK -- Almost six months after a rare face and hands transplant, Joe DiMeo is relearning how to smile, blink, pinch and squeeze. The 22-year-old New Jersey resident had the operation last August, two years after being badly burned in a car crash."I knew it would be baby steps all the way," DiMeo told The Associated Press recently. "You've got to have a lot of motivation, a lot of patience. And you've got to stay strong through everything." -Experts say it appears the surgery at NYU Langone Health was a success, but warn it'll take some time to say for sure.Worldwide, surgeons have completed at least 18 face transplants and 35 hand transplants, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing, or UNOS, which oversees the U.S. transplant system. SEATTLE (AP) — Shane Waldron hit all the right notes Tuesday as he discussed his first opportunity to be an offensive coordinator in the NFL. Now comes the wait for the fall to find out whether Waldron’s offensive beliefs will mesh with what works best for Pete Carroll, Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks on the field. “I’ve talked to Pete a bunch about this throughout the process. He has my back, fully supportive with what I want to do and what direction we want to take this thing together,” Waldron said. “So it will be a situation where I feel like I’m walking into a great scenario, with a bunch of great coaches that have such a solid foundation.” Waldron, who was announced as Seattle’s new offensive coordinator last week, is being given his first chance at running an NFL offense after spending time previously in New England,...
CHELSEA boss Thomas Tuchel decided to pick a starting line-up that had a decent mix of youth and experience, and it totally paid off.  Marcos Alonso barely kicked a ball under Frank Lampard, but he was given the nod against Burnley at left wing back today, much to the surprise of everyone associated with Chelsea.  2Thomas Tuchel celebrates his first win in charge of Chelsea as they dominated BurnleyCredit: Colorsport He looked rusty initially, which is probably natural after such a long time out, and his first touch was a little off early on. President Joe Biden signed a series of executive orders from the Oval Office hours after his inauguration. Biden wore a mask as he sat behind the “Resolute” desk with a stack of decrees Wednesday afternoon. He declared that “there is no better time to start than today.” The first decree Biden signed was related to the coronavirus pandemic. He also signed an order to rejoin the United States in the Paris agreement on climate change. Although his predecessor Donald Trump broke a longstanding practice by failing to take office, he did follow a tradition and left a letter for Biden. The new Democratic president commented that Trump “wrote a very generous letter.” But Biden said he would not reveal its contents until he had a chance to speak with Trump. The president called on the Americans to overcome their divisions by...
Getty Calvin Johnson during a Lions game against Seattle. The Detroit Lions don’t often land first-ballot NFL Hall of Famers, but they have a good candidate in the form of Calvin Johnson for 2021. Johnson will soon learn his fate. Will he be immediately inducted, or will he have to wait a while? That’s a question many have recently debated, but Johnson himself doesn’t seem to be sweating the details no matter what happens. Recently, Johnson joined the Huddle & Flow podcast with Sam Wyche and Jim Trotter and was asked if he would be disappointed if he didn’t get inducted immediately. As he said, he’s not sweating it one bit. On the topic of the Hall of Fame, Johnson said: “Man, we’re here now. Of course it will feel like a slight I guess if you don’t get in the first time and you’re up there. Of...
Heavy fortified statehouses around the US see small protests 400K coronavirus deaths in a year: How the U.S. guaranteed its own failure Solid chance that Red Sox wont trade Andrew Benintendi? Despite all of the trade speculation swirling around Andrew Benintendi, the Red Sox haven’t “reached a point of no return in trade talks,” The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier writes, and “there’s a solid chance, though not a guarantee” that Benintendi won’t be moved. One of the obstacles preventing a deal is the number of quality left field options remaining in free agency, so a team in need at the position might prefer to just sign a longer-term answer, rather than swing a trade with the Sox for a player who is under team control for only two more seasons.  Speier notes that the Red Sox themselves could be such a team looking for a longer-term outfielder, and could...

Titles Aren’t Won off of Talent Alone Despite their undeniable talent, James understands that the Nets have a target on their backs and championships are not won off of talent alone. “It’s not a guarantee that me coming to Brooklyn is guaranteeing a title,” James told reporters over Zoom on Friday. “I think, for me, giving myself a chance is very, very important. Dear Moneyist, I’m considering proposing to a long-time girlfriend, but unsure how to handle division of assets down the road. I have been married previously and have a high-school aged child. She has no kids, and there are no plans for any in the future. I have fairly sizable assets within my retirement savings, brokerage accounts and a paid-off home. The kicker is that there’s a good chance I will get early-onset Alzheimer’s within the next 10-15 years (one of my parents got it in their late 50’s, which means it’s probably hereditary). I haven’t been tested for the gene and I’m not planning on it, but it’s with a high level of certainty, I’ll get it. My girlfriend is fully aware of this. That said, I’m trying to plan financially so that my healthcare doesn’t become a burden, which is my biggest priority. But in terms of...
