The newest trend in holiday gifts doesn't take up space in carry-on luggage or add weight to checked bags. It doesn't even need to be packed. Rather than giving holidaymakers new gear for travel — electronics organizers, Yeti thermoses, yet another airplane pillow — some are giving travel itself.    A survey of more than 1,000 Americans by the computer company Adobe showed that while 51% of respondents plan to purchase physical gifts this holiday season, 17% plan to give "an experience" instead. Survey respondents cited spa treatments (25%) and concert tickets (25%) most often, while others said they planned to give plane tickets (21%) and cooking classes (16%) as gifts. "Experience gifting" — as it is known — isn't new. But it's finding traction this holiday season as a push for minimalist packing converges with a pandemic that has made travel a top priority for many in 2022.    More experiences, less 'stuff'Migle Rakauskaite, the chief marketing manager at travel experience website Tinggly.com, said the pandemic is prompting an increase in travel experience gift purchases. "Gifting traditions are changing," she said....
Scouting Report: This suitcase is sleek, fits in the overhead compartment, and rolls with ease. Traveling has never been more of a breeze. With both domestic and international travel plans on tap this summer, I decided it was time to finally invest in a good-quality carry-on suitcase. Since my social media feed, friends, family, and colleagues all raved about Away, I decided to purchase their cult-favorite The Bigger Carry-On. With over 3,000 positive reviews and a 4.9-star rating, the luggage promises to fit perfectly in the overhead bin of most airplanes and feel lightweight enough to bring with you in your car or on the train, too. The Bigger Carry-OnShop at Away$ As someone who has now used it three times including on a long car ride and plane ride, I can confirm it does just that—and more. But its lightweight feel and compact size aren’t the only star features it has, the carry-on also comes with a hidden laundry bag inside for easy washing at home, an ejectable USB charger to charge your phone and devices, and lots...
By: KDKA-TV News Staff PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A Carnegie Mellon University alum and trustee has a new mission in life after flying into space earlier this week. 49-year-old Glen de Vries, the Vice Chair of Life Sciences and Healthcare for a tech company in New York was among those on Blue Origin’s New Shepard. (Photo Credit: KDKA) De Vries flew into space on Wednesday with three other crew members, including Star Trek’s William Shatner. De Vries says it was an experience unlike any other, and now he wants to get others interested in the space industry so they can travel through the atmosphere, too. “I thought that would be important to me before we went up, and having done it makes me feel twice as much conviction. Maybe a thousand times more conviction. That is something we need to make accessible in an equitable way, to as many people on the planet as possible,” de Vries said. De Vries stresses another way of doing that is by making things cheaper so more people can experience what he did.

Olivia Culpo has hit out at JetBlue after the airline banned her dog from her flight home, forcing the former Miss USA to cancel her flight home to see her COVID-19 infected parents.  Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover model Culpo posted a video to Instagram of herself crying over the incident, alongside her dog, Oliver.  'I'm sure I'm not the only one who ran away crying at the airport, but it's the worst experience I've ever had,' she said. 'I just want to be able to go home.'  'When both your parents have COVID and you're trying to get home to help them but suddenly your dog who was already pre approved is not allowed to fly with you. 'I have never wanted to be this person and I have always been the hugest @jetblue fan but I am just soooo so so upset right now. He has flown on this airline so many times and it's never been an issue,' Culpo wrote on her Instagram post.  Olivia Culpo posted a pic of her and her dog, Oliver, getting ready for...
During the journey, passengers experience a few minutes of weightlessness before the rocket glides back to Earth. Photo: GENE BLEVINS / . / . Virgin Galactic, billionaire Richard Branson’s space travel company, has put his space travel tickets up for sale to the public. Prices for a seat start at $ 450,000 each, which is between $ 200,000 and $ 250,000 more than what the company previously charged, when it made another presale. Branson’s company said people will be able to purchase multi-seat packages so they can have the opportunity to share the experience with friends or family. They may also have the option of purchasing a full flight. The Virgin Galactic company had been trying to make space travel feasible for almost 20 years, finally making its first maiden voyage carrying a full crew last July. On that first flight, company founder Richard Branson and three other people traveled 55 miles above the Earth’s surface. Unlike other space travel companies, Virgin Galactic ships do not shoot off the ground. These rockets are carried...

The parabolas create a weightless environment for flyers inside the aircraft’s padded 30-foot cabin.  The...
The LEGO NINJAGO World section of LEGOLAND Florida Resort in Winter Haven, Florida.LEGOLAND/Merlin Entertainments Theme parks are set for a big rebound this summer as much of the country starts to exit Covid restrictions. And many of the high-tech, low-touch solutions parks implemented during the pandemic to enable limited reopenings are here to stay and, in fact, are proving popular with both guests and park operators. That's according to a new study by technology developer Oracle Food and Beverage and Merlin Entertainments, operator of nine Legoland parks worldwide, including California, Florida and, after a year's delay, upstate New York. (Originally set to open in spring 2020, Legoland New York debuted this July 9 an hour north of New York City in the town of Goshen as the state's first major new park in four decades.) Eighty-one percent of respondents in the firms' Theme Parks Trends 2021 survey are optimistic they'll soon be able to spend quality time with loved ones at their favorite leisure spots, and 68% said they'll head back to theme parks, specifically, as soon as they are...
Blue Ridge Mountains Travel Guide recently featured Summerville as one of their destination locations.   The article states that the chances are the city of Summerville GA probably isn’t on your list of must-see Blue Ridge mountain towns. Located 24 miles north of Rome, just 10 miles east of the Alabama border, the town has a population of around 4,200 people, which marks a 17% decline over the last 30 years. It doesn’t have the name recognition of bustling tourist hotspots like Helen or Blue Ridge GA, the bounty of outdoor attractions you’ll find in and around Clayton, or the rich history of a town like Dahlonega. There aren’t even any 4-star hotels in Summerville. So why should you visit one of the lesser-traveled cities in Northwest Georgia?  Two good reasons– space and personality. Being off-the-beaten-path of tourism, the outdoor attractions in the Summerville area draw far fewer crowds than you often see in other parts of the North Georgia mountains. And in a town most famous for being the...

Virgin Galactic Holdings is a company of space travel and aerospace vertically integrated, pioneer in manned space flights for individuals and researchers. On March 30, his latest project was presented, the VSS Imagine, a space plane designed to offer customers a “unique and transformative” experience. The company intends to start to make the long-awaited flights tourist suborbitals starting next year. Video presentation of VSS Imagine “As a SpaceShip III class of vehicle, Imagine is not only beautiful to look at, it represents Virgin Galactic’s growing fleet of spacecraft. All great achievements, creations, and changes begin with an idea. Our hope is that all those who travel to space return with new perspectives and new ideas that will bring positive change to our planet” said Richard Branson, founder of Virgin. As VSS Imagine begins ground testing, manufacturing will advance on VSS Inspire, the second SpaceShip III-type vehicle within Virgin Galactic’s fleet. The introduction of this class of vehicle is an important milestone in Virgin Galactic’s multi-year effort that aims to fly 400 flights per year, per spaceport. This third generation...
New York : For a year it has been practically impossible to do tourism. That is why Amazon launched in September 2020 a platform for virtual tours and experiences under the name “Amazon Explore“, That although it is still in the” beta “phase, it has more and more services on offer. Amazon Explore tries to replicate the experience of visiting a place, attending a cooking course, taking a tour with a guide in a museum, etc. without having to leave home. All through a livestream. No, it cannot be compared to actual experience, of course. But many would be surprised how entertaining it can be to interact with some Italian sisters while they teach you how to prepare fresh pasta, or “direct” your virtual walk through a Tokyo market. The experiences are live, not recorded videos, and the user can speak and ask questions of the guide or whoever is in charge of the experience. The experiences are of all kinds and of very varied prices, but some of them can be hired for only $ 10 dollars. Some...
Planning your first trip in a while? COVID-19 has completely transformed the travel experience, according to an AAA analysis. “The entire travel experience has been transformed by COVID-19. If you’re considering travel sometime this year, it’s more important than ever to do your due diligence ahead of any trip to ensure it is safe and enjoyable,” said Paula Twidale, senior vice president, AAA Travel in a statement. “As vaccines help boost consumer confidence to begin traveling again, we have to remember that wearing masks and social distancing are still a requirement.” What To Expect When traveling this year, people can expect to encounter: Masks - Yes, we’ll still be wearing them out in public for the foreseeable future. More highway driving - Travelling by auto will likely be more popular this year due to concerns about the spread of COVID-19 on public modes of transportation such as trains, plains, and bus. If you’re renting a car on vacation, AAA recommended asking the car company what they have done to ensure the vehicle is clean. Plenty...

TikTok users have uncovered a bewildering CIA report from nearly four decades ago which describes the agency's belief that humans can transcend space and time using a technique called the Gateway Experience.  The report entitled Analysis and Assessment of The Gateway Process was penned in 1983 by US Army Lieutenant Colonel Wayne M McDonnell.  McDonnell described the Gateway Experience as 'a training system designed to bring enhanced strength, focus and coherence to the amplitude and frequency of brainwave output between left and right hemispheres so as to alter consciousness, moving it outside the physical sphere so as to ultimately escape even the restrictions of time and space'.  In simpler terms, the Gateway Experience uses sounds tapes to manipulate brainwaves with a goal of creating an altered state of consciousness in which a person can interact with nonphysical aspects of reality.    Practical uses of the technique, according to the CIA report, include manifesting goals, converting energy to heal one's body, and even traveling across space and time to access new information.  McDonnell's report concluded that the Gateway Experience is in fact...

(CNN)Search and rescue teams are scouring the stormy waters of the Java Sea, hunting for the wreckage of Sriwijaya Air Flight 182.At this early stage, Indonesian officials still don't know why the Boeing 737 suddenly plunged from the sky within minutes of take-off. Hours after the plane crashed Saturday afternoon, authorities began the grim search for the 62 passengers and crew who were on board. While it is too soon to speculate on what caused the Sriwijaya Air disaster, and it should be noted that the airline has a solid safety record with no onboard casualties in four incidents recorded on the Aviation Safety Network database, for me it brought back an uncomfortable memory, which speaks to the wider problem of aviation safety in Indonesia. The Indonesia Rescue team find part of a Sriwijaya Air plane on January 10, 2021. The hospitality industry will continue to face an unprecedented level of challenges amid the coronavirus pandemic in 2021, and success will rely on how companies and individual properties respond to the key trends that are poised to shape the year ahead. With some valuable insight from data and analytics company GlobalData, here are some of the notable hospitality trends to watch for in 2021. Enhanced Hygiene Protocols The hospitality industry was quick to implement elevated safety and hygiene procedures in the weeks and months after the COVID-19 pandemic was first declared in March 2020, but companies are likely to continue building on and improving their various healthy stay programs and partnerships in the new year as they look to not only assure guests but separate themselves from the competition.  Enhanced hygiene standards have become the norm in the post-COVID hospitality industry. (iStock) Extended Stays Hotels and resorts introduced extended stay programs and packages en masse last year and that trend will continue in 2021 as guests pursue longer stays. "Travelers will be looking to take fewer trips — if not forced to due to ongoing travel restrictions — but those...
Millions of Americans appear to be playing it safe for the holidays due to COVID-19 — despite signs of a Christmas travel surge earlier in the week. Just 846,520 people passed through American airport security checkpoints on Christmas Eve, the TSA said — less than half the 2,009,112 who traveled by plane on Dec. 24, 2019. The dramatic drop comes after public health officials urged Americans to stay home for the holidays amid rising coronavirus cases. In spite of that guidance, the Christmas travel season has been the busiest period for airports since the outset of the pandemic. TSA agents screened 1.2 million people on Wednesday, the most since March 16. This past weekend marked the first three-day stretch with at least one million air travelers per day in just as long. The return to the skies marks a dramatic turnaround from the early days of the US’s COVID-19 outbreak, when TSA agents screened as few as 90,000 people on some days. Air travel numbers have crept up sine late April, as Americans have grown increasingly confident about traveling...

With the presidential election still a tossup late Tuesday, many Americans are searching online for how to move to Canada — but changing citizenship is actually not easy, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our mostly friendly neighbors to the north are actually a little picky about just letting anybody in — and all “discretionary” travel from the U.S. is currently prohibited, Canada’s immigration website says. Canada’s per capita COVID-19 death rate — 27.69 per 100,000 population — is less than half that of the United States’ rate of 70.07 per 100,000, according to the latest Johns Hopkins University data. And Canada would like to keep its numbers low, so much so that non-essential travel is essentially banned. “Until further notice, most foreign nationals cannot travel to Canada, even if they have a valid visitor visa or electronic travel authorization,” Canada’s immigration website says. Exceptions are made for accredited diplomats, immediate family members of a Canadian citizen, including a spouse, and international students.
