Six trillion dollars and counting . . . that’s the price tag that President Biden says Americans need to pay for his triple play of COVID-19 relief, infrastructure and social spending.  During his first speech to Congress, Biden promoted his latest, massive tax-and-spend proposal, dubbed the “American Families Plan,” which he called “a once-in-a-generation investment in our families — in our children.”  The $1.8 trillion package would include more than $500 billion for education, $225 billion each for child care and paid time off for workers, as well as $45 billion more for food stamps and school meals for needy kids.  Biden said his proposed social spending would be paid for with tax hikes on top incomes and on wealthy investors, and he repeated his promise not to raise taxes on Americans who earn less than $400,000 a year. President Biden’s speech Wednesday night failed on all counts: It didn’t sell his latest spending plan, it didn’t sell his larger agenda — and, worst of all, it didn’t sell him. Start with the utterly bizarre “mask theater.” All the politicians in the room have been fully vaccinated, and Biden’s own CDC says that’s enough. LOS ANGELES, California — Homeless encampments lined the sidewalks and parks near Union Station, the venue for Sunday evening’s Oscars, on Tuesday — 48 hours after the red carpet had been rolled up and the stars and media had gone home. The Hollywood elites chose the downtown venue, an Art Deco landmark in a part of the city that has slowly been overrun by the desperately poor. A short distance from Skid Row, and barely a block from the sidewalks where thousands of people have set up camp, the celebrities set up their red carpets, rolled up in their Escalades, and walked the red carpet in their couture gowns and suits en route to a self-congratulatory woke fest that was the lowest-rated and least-watched Oscars — ever. They did this at the epicenter of one of the worst homelessness crises in the United States. Homelessness rose a staggering 14 percent in...

India marked a grim milestone Wednesday with 200,000 people lost to COVID-19 — as a relentless surge of new cases overwhelms hospitals, sends families searching for oxygen supplies, and has seen parking lots in the capital New Delhi converted into crematoriums. The health ministry reported a single-day record of 3,293 deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the world’s second-most populous country’s total fatalities to 201,187. India, a country of nearly 1.4 billion people, also reported 362,757 new infections, a new global record, which raised the overall total past 17.9 million. The previous high of 350,000 on Monday had capped a five-day streak of recording the largest single-day spikes in any country during the pandemic. The country is the fourth to cross 200,000 deaths, behind the US, Brazil and Mexico – but experts believe the infections and fatalities in India are severe undercounts. For the past week, more than 2,000...
